Complicating matters for special education students, including students with disabilities, studies have also demonstrated that the dropout rate among special education students is considerably greater than that of regular students. It, therefore, follows that the negative effects of students with disabilities failing to complete high school are augmented. The rationale for conducting this study is predicated on the unique disadvantages of special education students and students with disabilities, which obviate the need for directing attention toward identifying, analyzing and understanding the experiences of special education high school students who do not complete high school so that we may be better positioned to make informed decisions relative to dropout prevention programs for this group of students.

By conducting this study, conclusions may be drawn based on the results. They may more appropriately direct educators and policy-makers on how strategies and programs for improving the rates at which high school students complete high school can be improved. The lived experiences of students who did not complete high school will inform of the main obstacles to high school completion among a specific population in an environment where students are more apt to discontinue high school. In other words, drawing on the lived experiences of former students, persistence programs and strategies may be developed and implemented which can specifically and more effectively address the problematic experiences of a particular student population representative of the larger population of students with disabilities and special education students generally.

Hence, understanding the experiences of special education students who drop out of school can pro, vide at the very least, some insight into why students drop oton to their individual student characteristics and can provide useful information in deciding what appropriate dropout prevention strategies can be applied and what modifications can be made to existing strategies to suit a specific student population for maximum efficiency and success.
