Ergonomics Society Ergonomics is a term reverent to the systems of work and the science behind work. It comprises of all factors involved in the work process. Physical, mental and organizational dimensions of the work process constitute an essential prospect of production. Physical component comprises of anatomical indulgence of a worker in the process of material creation. The aspects of physical involvements in work include health, safety, and workers’ ability to keep up with required postures at work and its overall effect on his/her health. The process further utilizes cognitive behavior of a person. It involves mental activity such as memorizing, motor response, reason and perception among others. Mental capacity requirements are determined by the kind of work a person is involved in. use of mental capacity however, involves some body coordination systems more than others. For example, Maria in lock assembly uses motor response and memorizing more than any other mental activity. Other factors are concerned with the overall policy and organization of the firms where a worker engages in productive activities. They involve such aspects a teamwork and communication. They are especially focused on creating a good working environment. These aspects lead firms to engage itself in societal events that aid in public image creation. They appeal to quality improvement and boosting workers morale (Taylor and Francis 1967). Maria’s lock assembling process engages both her physical self, her mental and psychological persona. Her physical capacity is involved in putting together the pieces of metallic items in question such as pins. For Maria, it is important that she remembers where each one of her working material falls in the lock design. Her mental capacity is useful for such knowledge while it develops coordination in the sequence of assembling activity. Maria combines certain pins in a uniquely permuted manner for every key to unlock a certain padlock. The process involves Maria’s coordination in the course of removing the lock mechanism and using the VDT to compare the arrangement of the color coded pins and their proper sequence. This process utilizes motor responses and memorizing. An entire process of work in ergonomics not only engages the body mind and physiological aspects of a person, it also develops such aspects. Repeated coordinated activity for example improves on the person’s ability to carry out more than one task at the same time. It increases the productivity of that person and quality of labor input in creating the final product. The process improves on the person’s ability to judge since he/she has been involved in a testing procedure. For example Maria tests the lock and keys she has assembled for consistency. Work procedure requires that the tasks involved be well organized from the initial steps. Plans and schedules are incorporated in the work process to provide smooth transitivity. In the assembling process for example, Maria begins with arranging the pins in the order which she will use. She then proceeds to confirming the sequence of those pins with lock structures laid before her. Her organized work set up boosts her morale to work (Francis, 1967). Organization is useful on a single worker’s level in addition to the firm level. On the firm’s level, Maria is involved on the firm’s schedule nine hours each day with two breaks, midmorning and a midafternoon break. An organizations structure is useful when it makes provision for rotation among its workforces. This is because of the overall effects of a work process on workers. Rotation is important where there is specialized skill to provide breaks from the same activity. When a work process is mustered, the worker’s personal life is influenced. Their body system does repeated activities every day that causes that person psychological effects. A work process should involve interactions with other people and breaks like these for motivational purposes. It should as well incorporate other activities in order to expand on the workers knowledge and aid them achieve flexibility of the mind. Flexibility is useful in decision making and improving ideas through creativity among workers. Too much work may become monotonous, reducing the level of productivity among workers and the general output. Organizations should ensure that workers take breaks from certain jobs that strain musculoskeletal organs. It can be enhanced by creating rotational processes where a worker takes over from another in the period they are away. The working environment of Maria depends further on the culture of the organization, Master Locks. Her attitude towards work is for example partly dependent on the organization’s own sense of motivation and appreciation for employees’ efforts and dedication. Whether there is provision for extra activities other than the routine work process and to what extent workers socialize amongst themselves. It is important also that workers feel secure at their places of work. An organization develops its own culture further to promote its workers by emphasizing humanistic values. Aiding workers with insurance and a sense of belonging that appreciates them and stirs among them a form of loyalty to the firms. Poor treatment of workers, poor conditions for work process like tedious technology all in the long run affect workers psychologically and mentally (Taylor et al 1967). Work process as that of Maria, is specialized. She is involved in a repetitive process that makes her more efficient in the overall output. Repetitiveness however can be a cause for both monotony and over use of certain systems of the body. Which poses as a danger to one’s health from underutilization of other body systems. Breaks from work that is mentally and physically involving should be well spread around the clock to increase productivity. Especially which is boosted by the quality of products along with quantity count. The overall effect of work process is psychological. Psychological impacts of work are dependent on both physical and mental activity. Work should therefore look into the two aspects critically to create favorable environment. All aspects personal health, mental or social factors that affect the life of a worker translate to productivity. Attention to details and signs in these areas should therefore be taken seriously in the course of effecting a good working system.
