E-Commerce Introduction E-commerce refers to the use of the web to transact business. It is a type of industry where the buying and selling of products is undertaken using electronic systems such as the internet. This essay will generally give answers to some questions on the field of e-commerce. Describe the vision of online retailing during the early days of e-commerce. Did these predictions and assumptions turn out to be true? During early days of e-commerce, there were many intentions for such undertakings such as introduction of Twitter and Facebook to be go-to places for checking prices in stores to do some product research and now more about products that are sold online. This undertaking was also meant to help organizations to handle their business operation through business-to-business sites and all other companies globally (Laudon and Traver, 39). Generally, e-commerce can also be referred to as refashioning the method in which goods and services are bought. The individuals who created this type of commerce meant it to make people do away with the traditional way of making money and start using the technological way. In the recent years it has been noted that the number of people who transact business online increase as days go by. This gives a clear impression that the vision of those who started this plan came to pass. There are many individuals these days that use the internet to transact business especially large companies that have many branches in different geographical regions. There are many individuals in the current society who carry out their businesses online because with the increasing use of technology the number of businesses that can be undertaken by an individual is high. For such people to manage all the businesses effectively, they choose to undertake them online so that they can monitor all the activities at the right time making certain that every operation is done as expected (Laudon and Traver, 67). With the large companies a managing director is not able to make himself available in every organizational branch which means that the monitoring of activities in all branches is done using the web. In the contemporary society people are able to sell products to those that are far away using the web and this satisfies the thought that the traditional ways of transacting businesses are no longer practiced today. What are the key challenges facing the online newspaper industry? According to Laudon, there are many challenges faced by the online newspaper industry. Among these challenges is the high price of newsprint. The amount of money needed for a newspaper industry to be able to publish all the happenings is high. This means that the money received through sales by organization doing it online is less compared to the amount used to print the details. It gives a clear impression that companies transacting newspaper business online are not able to make profits s expected. The other challenge is competition. In the contemporary society, individual who sell newspapers are increasing in number giving a clear impression that those who purchase their newspapers online are very few. Many individuals prefer buying them instead of purchasing them online. Incoherent advertising sales are another problem faced by the online newspaper industry (Laudon and Traver, 110). This means that most of the time there is confusion and the wrong newspapers can be advertised or wrong information placed in the wrong newspaper. With such confusion, the clients that have their newspapers online reduces making the industry have less returns due to less amount gathered from online sales. In the recent years, the number of newspapers scheduled for closure has increased. This means that the online companies that major on certain newspapers are as well likely to close down. It becomes an advantage to those companies that major on several newspapers so that if some are closed down then they are able to sell the others. For those that concentrate on one line are at a risk of dissolving their organizations because if it happens that it is their line of concentration that is being done away with, it is hard to start up with another line. Bankruptcy and severe reduction is another key challenge faced with the online newspaper industry. In this case, it is clear that some of these companies do not have enough money to keep up their business transaction online and due to this some of them may end up being dissolved (Laudon and Traver, 126). With all these problems, online newspaper industry faces many challenges which means it is one type of business that needs individuals who are patient and committed to be involved in it. Explain three dimensions of media convergence? There are various dimensions used in the e-commerce process so as to make sure that all the activities undertaken online are carried out effectively and are at the end of the day done to completion. Three among the dimensions of e-commerce are: Technological Industrial Social With the technological dimension, it is where the combination of communications, computing and content around net set-up digital means policy. This means that it is different form the traditional way of carrying out business as it only involved the client and the entrepreneur meeting physically most of the time. In this type of commerce, there is combination of various systems that act together to make all connections required for the transaction of business to occur. The computing system is required because the internet needed for transaction can be made available by this facility (Laudon and Traver, 289). Through the provision of computers, the organizations that carry out their business online are able to provide the clients with all the information needed on products making sure that the customers are contented with what is provided. It is therefore a system combination of systems which in turn helps the organization to have feedback from the clients so as to respond to any complaints appropriately. Looking at the industrial dimension there is development of digitally-based companies such as the Microsoft and Google. These digitally-based companies help clients to know more about products that are always sold before necessarily purchasing them. This is because clients always prefer products that are of high quality so that they cannot end up wasting away their money. With the development of these companies, the clients are able to dig in and gather information on what they need to know about the products they want to purchase through the internet. The third dimension which is social dimension, deals with the rise of social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube (Laudon and Traver, 310.) These social networks in e-commerce are used to connect individuals who transact the business for further explanation on products, orders and deliveries. Discuss the use of social networks by business (such as coke, Disney e.t.c). Social network in business is always used for various purposes. In this case, talking specifically about the e-commerce it is used to carry out various activities as all the undertakings of the business are carried out online. First it is used for connection with all employees in different regions. This applies mainly to those organizations that have branches in different geographical location. With such cases, it is clear that the general manager cannot be in all these geographical reasons at the same time. The general manager is expected to monitor all the operations in all branches to make certain that all tasks allocated are done to completion (Laudon and Traver, 412). To make this possible without being available physically, he or she has to gather information from the junior branch managers which are usually submitted through the internet. With this type of supervisions, the managing director is able to know how all the branches of the organization are doing making sure that all the operations are carried out effectively. The other use of the social networks in commerce is the process of making and delivering orders to respective clients. For organizations that deal with large quantity production, most of the time the clients make their orders online for early preparation so that the products can be transported to their premises. In this case, the organization uses the social networks to connect with the clients in order to avoid discrepancies during delivering products. It is easier to connect with the clients using the internet because most of them are located in different geographical regions as well. The clients thereby use the social networks to connect back to the individuals in the organization for the purpose of making their payments online (Laudon and Traver, 516). In case of shortages, the managing director is able to connect with the other branches in order to make sure that they have been provided with all the facilities needed for production to do away with the problem of shortages. The social networks therefore, are generally used to make individuals working in the same organization connect and associate with each other. What are private industrial networks? In what ways can they support collaborative commerce? Private industrial networks are web-enabled net set-ups that enable the coordination of business transaction between specific companies. This includes all the aspects of business related departments such as the suppliers, distributors, procurement, deliver and other commercial activities carried out by any entrepreneurial organization. Many large companies usually use this type of networks because they facilitate efficiencies throughout the net set-up system. These forms of networks can be of benefit to the companies using them in different ways. These types of networks always encourage more efficient processes of buying and selling throughout the production process (Laudon and Traver, 673). This means that the companies that use it are able to have the processes of buying and selling throughout meaning profits are made as expected because products are always bought. It also helps in resource planning making the organizations know how to manage the available resource and use them effective enough. The fact that it involves specific organizations helps them to know how to manage resources because they already know what is required for effective production to take place. The organizations using these systems can also have increased supply chains because they get to know the feedback of the clients, responding to their complaints appropriately making them maintain clients and even attract more. As it involves specific companies, it means that there are no or less companies that join in the groups ad this helps to develop a good relationship between buyers and sellers as they are used to transacting business together. With the development of a good relationship, other issues that lead to the organizations earning more profits get to improve (Laudon and Traver, 812). These issues include increase in demand from clients, improved communications and conflict resolution. The use of these networks also leads to reduction in risks and also the imbalances that are related to supplies together with financial derivatives. It is clear that private industrial networks are the best option for those large companies undertaking e-commerce. Work Cited Laudon, K. C., Traver, C. G. E-Commerce 2013: Global edition.
