The link between security professionals and the architects in the architecture design process is brought about by the need to prevent the potential dangers that may come with the wrong architecture design, including failure of the security system to holistically detect, delay, deter, and respond to security threats.P1 stated that the relation between the security professional who is engaged in physical security and using CPTED and the architects and other engineers in the architecture design process is concerned with preventing several defaults in security that may happen.

Such a notion is consistent with Vellani’s (2009) remark that when the security professionals are not involved in the design process, several issues may happen such as overspending on unnecessary security devices, and the facility owner’s increased liability to lawsuits and lastly, security components may not serve their objective as required. P2 noted that the link comes about as part of risk mitigation. P2 suggested that the relationship derives from the systems theory, where each of the professionals has its own understanding of security architecture and that when both are leveraged and integrated, wholesome architecture design is constructed.

P2 said: “That is before you [00:05:00] start to talk to the other consultants, but you may have talked to the architect already because the architect would have given you some concepts of what he thinks this might look like.”P3 also pointed to the idea of risk mitigation as forming the link between the roles of security engineers and architects in designing a security architecture. In his reply to the relationship between the two security professionals, P3 said: “I think that they have got an ongoing role throughout the process because a security professional is a professional at risk.

Risk is a major ongoing project, particularly where it is a high-threat environment, then it would make sense that the security professional would take a lead role in reviewing and ongoing monitoring and reviewing of the risk environment, and that will inform the project particularly when you have got a project with many components that make up a system.”
