The course has exhaustively discussed various guidelines to eco-design. Some of these guidelines include mandatory laws and voluntary guidelines. Additionally, I have also learned about the importance of ecolabelling, rules and regulations that govern them in approaching sustainability. Various international laws and voluntary ISO standards have also been discussed in details. Eco- design planning is a powerful way of improving a company’s environmental performance. Companies can use various methods to integrate eco-design in the development process for instance by Life Cycle Costing.
This approach assesses all costs of a product over its entire lifecycle. It is often applied to a high capital, long-term investments such as a building or transportation construction. The economics cost impacts are frequently not included in the LCC. The other significant ideas in the designing approaching sustainability is for the designer to design for efficient distribution, low impact use of product, optimized product lifetime and plan for the product an optimized end of life. Design for optimized product lifetime, it the designer should build in users desire to care for product long term.
It should also give room for upgrading, maintenance and durable. When it comes to distribution efficient, the products should be packed in reusable or recyclable packaging and use efficient transport system. Various ecolabelling and regulations have been utilized in reinforcing the environmental and social quality of sustainability. Some of these regulations I was familiar with, for instance, is the WEEE that has tremendously assisted in recycling of electronic product wastes. There are also some international agreements that addresses environmental aspects of products such as the Montreal Protocol that bans the use of substances that destroy stratosphere ozone.
On the other hand, the Basel Convention prohibits
