Download file to see previous pages As popular culture threatened to unseat high culture, and, worse, characterized by convention, avant-garde seemed unlikely to enter its realm and vice versa in the past. But in the 1960s, just as it seemed that the avant-garde and mass culture had agreed to ignore each other, a series of artistic events have crossed over and obfuscated the brow lines. There is the striking vogue of pop music among intellectuals and avant-garde artists. The Beatles have received the attention and approval not only of the Time magazine and Leonard Bernstein but also of the composer Ned Rorem in the austerely intellectual New York Review of Books. A number of pop groups would follow the footsteps of The Beatles, and high-culture artists crossed over to popular culture and back in music, visual arts, film, and other media. These developments led to the recognition that “popular culture” can be worthwhile and that such dimension could even be oriented toward “high culture” through its concessions to the avant-garde and popular taste. More specifically popular culture was recognized as a conducive environment for the active avant-garde school with its aim of innovation and reform. The avant-garde artists are increasingly using the technologies that have been the basis for a great deal of popular culture. In the end, the bypassing of borders between the fine arts has usually been a gesture in the tradition of the avant-garde (Anderson, p. 63)
The cutting edge of the avant-garde is an art that uses video, film, television, and photography. As these technologies become more accessible to those with limited means, it enhanced popular culture, developing it through the years. Even the previously excluded groups such as women, ethnic and other minorities and immigrants gained access to the postmodern forms, broadening the artistic output and intervention, particularly the avant-garde in popular culture. (Anderson, p. 63) One of the consequences of the avant-garde permeation is that its culture and behavior became increasingly frequent among creators who are identified with popular culture.
