The God Father by Roger Ebert - Movie Review Example

Godfather People believe that mobster life is all full of roses and fun, getting everything you wants in life, but the Godfather movie gives as a total different dimension to this perception. The movie gives as a picture of vicious tribal loyalties, violent neighborhood conflicts in Brooklyn and a form of fierce retributions to deal with the enemies of the clans in form of revenge to meet every affront. The remarkable thing about this movie is that it does not give us many international aspects concerning the mob family life and the intrigues that came with it. The movie is concentrated on the mobster s life, where everybody knew everybody including what they were doing (Ebert, 2010). If the Godfather movie were only about gun totting mafia style like what is happens mostly with a lot of gang like movies, it would not have got that much popularity in the movie industries and movie lovers. The difference between this movie and its predecessors that gives it a unique characteristic is its ability to weave between the disparate layers of the story and its ability to join them to give a single cohesive story. The remarkable thing about this movie is the way the writer has been able to portray the character that is starting from the inside proceeding with to an outside view of the setting. Also how the characters have been given priority, like for instance the Godfather himself even is not the main character of the movie, that role has been given to his youngest son called Michael who has appeared in the movie as a very intellectual person . Michael understands his father’s way of life and methods in which his father conducts business while still revising his father’s old-fashioned ways (Ebert, 2010). Michael at first rejects being involved with his family ways of life, which are the mafia like lifestyle. This demonstrates that he wants to be with Kaye, and not the family way of doing businesses. This resistance afterwards comes to diminished when his family’s power and influence comes under threat from outside forces, which later puts him in a position to intervene. This is because he is the only one who is capable of upholding it. By doing this, the writer gives the viewers, as sense of growth to the main character. The change of heart by Michael, in that he stops in believing that what his family does is wrong to believing that that the crimes that his family commit are necessary evils that must be committed. By this, the main character emerges and the main character position is resolved towards the viewers (Ebert, 2010). The main character is portrayed in the movie as a practical person who prefers to solve the family problems from an outside approach. This seen when he arrives from home as a World war II war hero claiming that he can solve the” Turk” (Sollozo) problem in which he does by killing Sollozo and the police captain. Another instance where the main characters approach is seen as doer. is when falls in love with Apollonian from afar and later proposes to her for marriage even before meeting her. He is seen to always prefer solving his problems externally rather than internally which leads to many murders being committed such as the” baptism of blood” where Michael eliminates every threat when assuming his title place in the family (Ebert, 2010). Michael uses a linear, cause and effect manner at looking at problems. He sees all the families that are involved with him as different link to one hierarchy of power. He can be seen not to care about the young ones who look up to them and the women. He is seen to take a bilateral approach to those people in the family and those people who are not in the family. That is why he warns people to take sides and to ever be loyal to the family. The main characters role is that of a male dominance, we can see Michael being able to convince himself that his wife should not know anything concerning his businesses and should not ask him anything concerning his dealing (Ebert, 2010). In this movie, Godfather, Functionalism, internationalism, sexism, racism and individualism primarily affect the loom to social change given that it opposes the formation of the movie according to foreigners. This situation is vibrant in the current world in that most of the scenes that deal with politics do not comply with international regulations when carrying out their operations. Many viewers do not believe that the world can change to one state and still live happily. This means that many actors believe that the power of nations is the best and if they formed one world state, rights and freedom of populations would be undermined. All these issues directly concentrate on the functionalism theory and culture. I think they might hold these stereotypes for example because Internationalism has an enormous effect on the social transform. Everyone can now be able to comprehend why political representatives and political parties seem unusual at times. This comes, as a result, to dissimilar actors interacting in diverse ways to a different state of affairs. Once a society gets scrutiny from such an angle, adoption of social change becomes extremely fast and easy (Berlin, 2007). Conflict theory is the most applicable one when it comes to explaining the result to social change in such a political monarchy. Many authors and movie directors claim that leaders who change things to favor them characterize the social order. When people try to act to the opposite of what these godfather states, they become deviants, which turn out to be punishable. Those in this movie remain in power for long because they have the capability to decide how the society runs its errands. The latter explanation is applicable to the question of political evolution. The question of free enterprise in opposition to Marxism in family units bothers many societies. This comes because of many underprivileged members of the society voicing their complaints about how in effective their leaders are. The government regimes for that reason have many changes. For Michael to have been the one going to take the massive responsibility to become the new don and lead the family’s business this had to affect his personal life. The fact that he was in love with Kaye, it had put him in a situation that he had to lie to her about his dealings in involving the murders that were taking place.
