WRITING ACTIVITIES Student Name Institution Date 1. Parts of Speech Effective communication enhances proper understanding between the sender and the receiver. However, communication between people of different cultures in challenging especially in cases where there is no proper interpretation. Culture, therefore, affects communication in three different ways. One is the cognitive constraints which are the reference points that each new information is compared to. Behaviour constraint are embedded in the fact that different cultures have different guidelines on good behaviour that have profound effect on both verbal and non- verbal communication. Last, is emotional constraints, where different cultures express emotions in different ways (Castells, 2013). A visit to Kenya with three of my colleagues exposed me to the reality that culture has profound effect on how people convey and perceive information. Our love for the diverse culture of the country led us to the north eastern part of the country where the Borana community lives. Despite the hospitality of the people of Borana community, communication was a big challenge. According to my culture, clicking is a form of disrespect and is prohibited, however, in the Borana culture, people agree to something by clicking. In trying to interact with the locals, there was a lot of frustration since we felt disrespected and left without gathering the information we wanted. 2. Nouns There are various types of media writing. The two most important types of media writing include news writing and editorials. News writing involves providing the reader with important information likely to affect them and streams from the most essential to less vital information. News writing commonly follows a structured formula with leads that are designed mainly catch the attention of the readers. It also involves finding out the most important information that readers need. The 5W’s and H of the event are of primary consideration in news writing. Since the stories that are covered in news writing are varied in form and nature, there may also be variation in the use of the 5W’s. Editorials, on the other hand, provide the views of a newspaper concerning an issue. Editorials can explain issues, persuade for solutions, praise or criticize issues. Editorial writing, therefore, requires a wise choice of topic. The editor should then establish proper arguments on the selected topic, supporting it with correlated arguments. An editorial that is properly written commonly ends with provision of relevant solutions to the issue in question. In presenting the solutions to the problem in question, the editor is not only entitled to providing constructive criticism but also to give possible alternatives that can be used to approach the issue. 3. Verbs Perth, which is the capital city of Western Australia, is one of the densely populated cities in the country with a population of over 2 million inhabitants. The city’s large population is linked to the gold rush in Australia in the late 19thcentury, leading into the immigration of individuals into the area. The weather is also the best in Australia, hence the popularity of the area. Among the places in Perth of attraction to international students is the Perth Arena. Officially opened in November, 2012, the arena is one of the most popular entertainment sites in Australia. One of the reasons why the arena attracts international students is its architectural design, which makes it a world class tourist attraction site. Secondly, the arena hosts many events and concerts that attract the youth such as the international students. The arena has a concert capacity of 15000 individuals. One of such events are the music concerts that are held in this place. Ever since the opening of the arena in 2012, several international musicians have entertained their fans in this place. Apart from music concerts, the arena is also used for sporting activities such as basketball, tennis and netball attracting students who are fans of such sports. 4. Verbs The leading Global fashion retailer H and M has announced expansion in the Australian market and seeks to open new stores in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane in 2016. Out team managed to interview Karl Persson, who is the director of the company and this is what he had to say: Me: Good evening sir, and welcome to Perth Television. We are so happy to have you here tonight. Karl Persson: Thank you so much. Am excited to be in Perth, it is an exciting place, the weather is pretty cool, and the people are hospitable. Me: A quick look into the H and M market expansion issue, the Australian market has never been critical to you in the past, why now? Karl Persson: I must say that opportunities always rise and as a businessman, one has to know when to invest in a certain thing. In my opinion, we have stores in Australia, and the increased demand of our products in the Australian market is what drives us to expand our territory to all the other big cities in the country. Me: How do you intend to conquer the Australian market in the wake of competition from other companies such as David Jones? Karl Persson: As I said earlier, there has been an increase in the demand for our products in Australia. That means that we have already created a market advantage over our competitors and I have no doubt that coupled with our products, pricing, promotion and place strategies, we are going to win the hearts of the people in various Australian cities and the country at large. Me: There have been a lot of complains in the past, especially by celebrities that most of the products provided by H and M are outdated. What can you say about that? Karl Persson: the complaints reached us at H and M, and I can assure the customers that the company has perfected its sourcing and supply chain to ensure that the customers have up to date fashion. Me: when can we expect the opening of these stores? I am sure some of the people are already waiting anxiously. Karl Persson: We have already found stores in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney, which are set to open early next year. Finding a store in Brisbane has been a challenge but we are not relenting. Me: Thank you so much for your time Dr. Persson, we appreciate you. Karl Persson: Thank you so much. Once again am happy to be in Perth. 5. Punctuation The feature article used for this discussion is by Aaron Favila and discusses how growing in a poverty inspired Alexander Cruz to come up with a half a million Christmas light show. The article begins with a bolded title which captivates the readers’ attention, making them eager to find more information about the story. The author then introduces the childhood of Cruz in a captivating statement that explains the frustrations of the young Cruz when he walked in the neighbourhood as a young boy to see the lights, but the gates were always closed. In the body of the article, the writer tries to inform the reader of the opinion of Cruz concerning his house. The author further indicates the impact of the presence of the house in that area, such as attracting people to the area especially during the weekends and holidays. The writer further gives the impression of the neighbours on the same and indicates that they have gotten used to people flooding the area because of the house. In his conclusion, the author notes that the presence of many visitors to the site causes the owner to lose privacy as well as the neighbours but does not indicate any solutions for this problem. 8. Media Release The media release used is sourced from SPH magazine and was posted on November 30th this year. The media release begins with a catchy headline indicating that TGen and Barrow Neurological institute have identified the genes linked to heart diseases caused by stress. The title of the media release is catchy, making the reader to have more interest in the topic. The first paragraph gives the lead to the story by indicating what is happening, the place where the issue is taking place, the time and why in this case the researchers have taken time studying such genes. Additionally, the method used by the researchers to achieve the presented results is also discussed. In the body of the media release, the author tries to build on the lead statement made above by providing additional information that supports the statements made earlier in the release. For instance, the author indicates the different research that has been done in the same field and indicates the developments that have led to the final success documented. In concluding the release, the author gives recommendations for future treatment of patients with the condition, stating for instance that genetic predisposition of patients should be known upon admission to increase effectiveness of treatment. The release ends by giving both press and researcher contacts. 9. Editorial roles As an editor with the Guardian Australia Online, one of the daily routines performed at work is correcting the mistakes in articles and blogs before posting them online. In most cases, because of the urgency of the work, for instance, most writers make grammatical as well as spelling mistakes without knowing. It is, therefore, one of my duties to ensure that the work presented is accurate in both form and grammar before posting them online for the readers. Reviewing articles helps in ensuring that readers get accurate information. Also, part of the editorial job involves acquiring materials for publication. In some instances, there is the need to publish something related with academic literature. Since there are different places where sourcing of the documents can be done, the job involves contacting the authors or publishers of the work that is to be used and asking for their permission for the book to be reviewed for instance. This avoids issues such as piracy. Part of the editorial job also involves writing notes on important discussions that have, for example, been going on at the site and taking a stand as well as providing relevant solutions to such issues. At times when there is too much work to be done, I also engage in writing articles. Reference Castells, M. (2013). Communication Power. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Read More
