Revising literacies My writing experience is quite an interesting one to tell. It starts from a person who can barely readan article let alone write one. A person who thinks he can never write any anything at all. That anything he wrote belonged to people who lacked writing “talent”. I did not believe I could a good article that could be accepted by anyone. I noted in my first article that from the first day I learnt how to write, writing has been a pain for me. However, this belief changed the very moment I laid steps on Michigan State University. The notion that I could not write changed the moment I became interested in WRA 1004. Before I met Mike, my WRA 1004 professor, I never thought literacy rules such “R.A.I.D.S” and “S.W.A.P” existed. R.A.I.D.S and S.W.A.P stand for “Revision”, “Arrangement”, “Invention”, “Delivery”, and “Subject”, “Writer”, “Audience”, “Purpose” respectively. Before taking this course, I did not know that where to start in writing a good essay. However, the most important gain I have learnt from this class is how to transform a formal essay into a project. My understanding is that this is not an easy task per say. The needed aspect is a creative mind that can arrange the main ideas in a manner that can be well digested by the target audience. This paper is therefore based on the important knowledge that I learnt in the WRA1004 class. This application has use as a tool to express my improvements this semester based on writing. Skills acquired in this course are very useful in my future life. Such skills may be used to solve major project or management issues in my career. This semester has seen changes in my opinions towards literacy. Before I started taking this course, I was not interested in writing. I therefore, got very poor grades in essay writing. In fact, my essay ranked among the least scored in the class. However, this semester has brought many changes in my view of literacy. It has come to my notice that literacy has to start with myself. I have to change my attitude about writing and begin to work hard. I have to believe in myself. I have to convince myself that I can write something good. For success in this kind of work, attention and concentration in class in vital. With all these, put together improvement in writing skill is inevitable. Before this semester, I used to believe that writing was a skill that some people had while others did not. This believe used to be confirmed by our teachers. Our teachers believed that my essays were of low quality. This was evident in the first essay when I noted that for the Chinese essays I wrote, teachers told me it was hard for them to find the main idea. For articles that were in English, they were still like a beginning learner of English”. It was not until the end of this semester that I realized that a good essay should revolve about the main idea of discussion. The factors have ability of making the readers to have an understanding of what individuals are attempting to convey. The main opinion that changed throughout the semester is that a person can show improvements in writing. Throughout the semester, I found myself writing better. It only needed more hard work and practice. Writing good was also related to what is taught in class. I found the course on writing very useful in strengthening my writing skills. At the end of the semester, I found myself not believing how much my writing had improved. Thanks to the course on writing. It is still not sure how much information I have on literacy. The fire of writing inside me is burning hard. The urge of knowing more on literacy grew day by day. In general, I want to become one of the best writers. I am sure that the skills acquired this semester will help me achieve this vision. I still believe there are things I need to know about literacy. I may want to know more on the how technology can be use to enhance literacy. Traditionally literacy has been dominated by learning and writing. Today technology e.g. internet based communication may be extensively used to enhance literacy with the involvement of teachers’ knowledge in these aspects (Obidike Ngozi 117) The knowledge acquired this semester is important in development as a writer and also in my future career. As a writer, I can now write quality articles that can be read by people worldwide. Through this, I can have an ability of sharing my ideas and opinions with a large population of people across the globe. Due to the skills, I have in writing, the information I write about is easily readable and comprehendible by readers and writers. In my future career, skills in writing are important. These skills will become handy in writing progress reports and other articles related to the job in question. I also learnt that writing is more than just writing. It involves self-discipline as well as sacrifice. To become a good writer one has to make that decision and start working hard to become one. In my first essay, I wrote that becoming literate will be a useful character in my future success. This success may not only be seen in my future career but also in my future college life as a student. Being in a position to write good articles form a vital skill to my academic success in college. The rest of my college career will benefit a lot from the writing skills and methods learnt this semester. Writing essays, academic reports, and articles is an important part of the school curriculum. The knowledge acquired this semester will enhance the quality of my reports and other academic writings. This will in turn translate into good grades. As a scholar, it is mandatory to make a publication in a reviewed journal. To develop a good paper that will be accepted, quality writing is required. Writing skills learnt this semester will therefore form a base upon which I will be able to write good academic papers. This essay is written on the background of my improvement in writing. It is related to my personal writing experience. This brings out the fact that I changed from a poor writer to a person who can write good articles and papers. All this improvement is attributed to what I learnt in class this semester concerning writing. This paper is therefore meant for people who are in the same shoes that I was in before making the stand to become a good writer. This paper may be a good motivator for students who are yet to join college and cannot write good essays. Such students may get the inspiration to push on. They will get to understand that to become a good writer, one has to make that decision and work hard for it. Why do I take my time to write about my success in improving as a writer? It is because I want to communicate to someone. I want to inform and encourage those who cannot write good articles and essays that it is still possible. I want to persuade them that if I was able to record an improvement in my writing ability, then they can also do the same.
