Prompt and Journal I. She walked into the gymnasium and began playing volleyball with the others. John and Patrick were sitting on the opposite sideof the gym as their class was just finishing and they were waiting for the PE teacher to tell everyone to go into the locker room. They both saw her and became immediately smitten. Veronica had just started at Lake Mary, High School. She had long black hair and a sort of mysterious beauty that immediately endeared her to others, particularly boys. After the class ended Patrick made sure to her approach her. He was an outgoing individual – the running back on the football team – and had no problem talking to her. Their conversation went all right and he was sure that if he were persistent he could surely get a date. Later in the day John was sitting in his trigonometry class and Veronica entered having just been assigned to the class. To his luck she was assigned the desk right next to his. Over the next few days they would strike up daily conversations and develop a friendship. At the same time Patrick had continued his pursuit of Veronica, making sure to talk to her after classes. The homecoming dance was fast approaching and both boys realized that they needed to bring somebody, having tired of merely hanging around with their guy friends like they did in Middle School. A couple weeks before the dance John sat in front of the phone sweating and dreading the call he had to make. At 7:00 PM he finally grabbed the phone and called Veronica. She appreciated his offer she said, but she had already promised to go with another person. John was heartbroken, he sat in front of the television watching the end of the basketball game. Eventually his brother Patrick came home and told him his big news – the new girl Veronica had agreed to go to homecoming with him. II. Thomas had always wanted to go to summer camp with the other children. He group up somewhat sheltered in an eastern Michigan town and never really participated in the traditional summer activities – swimming, football, basketball. When he turned twelve he really pushed his mother during the regular year to allow him to go to summer camp; when he got his report card with outstanding grades his mother finally acquiesced and allowed him to go. At summer camp Thomas found that it wasnt as fun as he had hoped. He had trouble making friends with the others and oftentimes found himself participating in events alone. There were counselors there, but they seemed distant and more concerned with their own on-goings than helping the summer campers. One afternoon Thomas had gone out to the river to swim. While the counselors were supposed to be supervising the children they were actually inside watching television. Not having experience swimming Thomas drowned. The entire camp was devastated and they had to cancel the rest of the summer. The next summer, the camp began again, but mysterious things started occurring. There was a dog that would hang around that had vanished. People just attributed this to it running away or dying in the woods or something. Then one fateful night, on the anniversary of Thomas death he finally reappeared. The counselors were at a meeting and as they left they split apart and walked alone towards their individual cabins. Walking up behind one of them Thomas sliced her throat. Later that night another counselor slept in bed and suddenly awoke. Above him was Thomas who instantly choked him to death. Finally, Thomas went to the door of another counselor. Finding it locked he took out a chainsaw and cut through the door; the counselors waking up cowered in the corner of the cabin and was promptly decapitated. Hearing the noise the others ran to the cabin, but nobody but the counselors bloodied corpse was found. III. Last Saturday I went out driving looking for the pizza place in my area to capitalize on the new deal they had. I had never been to the place because it was in a busy part of town and it was a hastle to drive through there. Of course, when I started driving to the area I didnt know where it was exactly at and got partially lost looking for the address, and then stuck in a traffic jam. It was stop and go traffic so I removed my seat belt to get more comfortable. After a half hour I realize this was hell, but it only got worse. While I was stuck not moving a cop on a horse tapped on my window and asked to see my license and registration. After handing them to him, he told me he had pulled me over because I was not wearing a seat belt. He then gave me a $100 seat belt ticket. IV. I went to the grocery store a few days ago and went about my normal routine. Bought milk, eggs, and coffee. I walked through the canned foods aisle and bought black beans. Finally, I went to the fruits aisle and bought oranges and bananas. As I walked towards the cash registers and waited in line someone tapped me on the shoulder and I turned around and noticed that it was a person I dated over a decade ago. It was quite a shock. I had not seen this person in many years and had no idea how they had changed, what they were doing with their lives, or even what to say to them. There was a slight awkward pause and then we began talking. I learned that their father had recently passed away surprisingly. The spoke about going through school and stopping to take time for work, and then how they would be returning soon. Finally, we parted ways. V. When I am home on Sundays I watch football games with my father. He has been a lifelong football fan and recently his passion for the sport had brought me to become interested in the game. My father moved around a lot and never had a hometown team, so he eventually became a very large Green Bay Packers fan. Growing up and hearing him talk about the Packers all the time I became sick of the team and began to hope they lose. Sunday was no exception as they played the Atlanta Falcons, except this time before the game we made it more interesting and bet that if the Falcons won he would buy dinner, and if the Packers won I would buy dinner. The game was close, going down to the fourth quarter, when the Falcons finally made a crucial stop and pulled out the victory. That night we went out and I ate a hearty Italian dinner for free. VI. The plane crashed three days ago and we have just finished taking inventory of what has survived – a pair of scissors, an electric keyboard, and a stopwatch. Not much to use, but we realize we needed to get out of here or else we would surely die. We began searching throughout the island and discovered that it has been deserted. When then searched the interior of the island and found a cabin. We entered the cabin and found a cardboard box in the closet. The box was covered heavily with tape and string and it was nearly impossible to open with our hands. We then realized we had the pair of scissors so we took them out and cut through the tape and string. The box eventually opened and we discovered a computer and a modem. We set the computer on the table and discovered that it needed a keyboard. Of course, having the electric keyboard from the crash left, we went back to our camp, retrieved and then returned and hooked it up to the computer. Inexplicably, there was a power outlet running into the cabin. We had no idea how it had gotten there, but we later came to understand that the island had been once used for a military operation and the power outlet had been run through their and never turned off after the troops left. Connecting the computer to the outlet to our great surprise we found that the computer connected to a wireless network. Connected to the network we contacted the proper authorities and informed them about our situation and they promptly sent a helicopter out to rescue us from the island. As we waited for the helicopter to arrive we sat on the shore of the beach and used the stop watch to time how long it took them to get there. We all made guesses and the person that came closest would get to eat the only piece of pineapple we found on the island. Read More
