Extract of sample "An Often-Cited Phrase among Technical Communicators"

“Know your audience” is an often-cited phrase among technical communicators. In short, it instructs writers to remember that for every piece of writing they create, there is an intended audience reading it. What audience considerations should any writer take into account before beginning to write? How might you go about conducting an audience analysis? What possible resources might you use to learn about the audience of your writing? In order to conduct an audience analysis, one might want to look at previous studies that have been done about one's particular situation.

In order to further educate oneself on the makeup of one's audience, it may be helpful as well to read informational articles in journals, on websites, and in books or newspapers that may be of relevance to one's topic. These are just a few of the steps a writer can take to ensure that his or her writing will address salient, valid points for the readers who have an interest in a writer's work.
