A Reflective on Senior Portfolio in Towson University During my time as a graduate student at Towson University, I have finished several research works and projects that aim to enhance and broaden my knowledge in health sciences, particularly on its administration which is the concentration of my Master's Degree. Doing research works advanced my knowledge on the different administrative tasks including planning and evaluation, administrative leadership and management, proficiency and communication. My collaboration with numerous types of respondents and fellow graduate students further my writing and speaking skills which gained me the ability and self-reliance to possibly hold organizational bodies which sets sight on improving the administration of health-related initiatives. I have produced a term paper which directs on the New Mexico Medicaid and its Modernization Plan and an in class presentation on cultural competence. On the paper, I only scored 85% due to the fact that I fail to correctly gather the entire relevant issues imperative for a correct interpretation of the study. On the oral presentation, I scored 90.3% partly because of partial mastery of the topic and certain demonstrational lapses like the lack of eye contact. Reflecting on these selections, I realized how important it is to be thorough, complete and all-encompassing in analysing a particular issue. Professionally, working on these projects triggered my critical thinking skills needed in order to assimilate all possible aspects of a particular issue with the aim of delivering more accurate, comprehensive and wide-ranging interpretations and inferences that will serve as a focal point in making more effective solutions and developments. Further, the SENIOR PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 2 selections taught me the importance of preparedness, self-confidence and profoundness in terms of the knowledge about the topic to facilitate the delivery of an informed, knowledgeable presentation. The opportunities that were offered to me during the entire duration of my Master’s degree work, and the chances presented to me to work on the many societal issues related to the administration of health sciences, were all expansive and thought-provoking. Nevertheless, the learning that I received from my professors, classmates and my research projects widened my understanding about health administration by allowing me to directly experience the administrative practices involved in the research projects, by working together with professors, and most importantly, by reflecting on my personal encounters. Today, there are numerous cases of sexual relationships thriving in our society; in fact, they are proliferating in acceleration. This is a problem that has been existing for so many years, and yet because of the type of government we are living in, prostitution cases has continued to shoot up. It is an imperative societal problem that needs to be addressed as this destroys the lives of many young individuals who were unintentionally impregnated due to certain causes. These particular grounds triggered my interest in knowing the different causative factors encompassing the issues of promiscuity in relation to the activity of parenthood. As a result, I have conducted a study on the related literatures pertaining to The Jamaican Adolescent study and one literature review on Father Presence matters. These selections capture my analytic abilities as it requires thorough and inquisitive scrutiny on the possible reasons why many young children, especially adolescents are indulging in oftentimes pre-marital sexual intercourse which according to my SENIOR PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 3 research and many other studies, promiscuity in children is attributable to the poor “father presence” during childhood. In conducting this study, it is important for me as a researcher to develop profound knowledge and sharp analytic expertise on the different overlapping issues and parallel studies that can be related to the topic at hand. The selection is centered on whether the presence or absence of a biological father during early childhood increases promiscuity. This is a topic that encourages in-depth, conscious discussions and wide-ranging analysis of the subject matter. I thought that if I would only base it on the existing inferences and conclusions available in books and the internet, the assurance of verifying the factuality and accuracy of these existing findings may just appear as a "spoon-fed" on my part. As a result, I intensified my analytical skills by subjecting the topic at hand into an intense scrutiny, with the help of numerous references and existing findings. Some studies concluded that, indeed, the absence of father during someone’s childhood contributes to the eventual promiscuous behavior of the child. This is based from a scientific study and may be admitted as a fact. However, if that would only be the basis of all the possible angles of promiscuity among adolescents, the solution could have been served already long ago which likewise be ironical considering the increasing cases of unwanted pregnancies and eventual abortion among young teens today who are frequently indulging in premarital sex. The bottom line is that, my involvement with research enhanced my analytic expertise by continually immersing me into the different issues present in our societies and by encouraging me to understand and think deeply on the manifold and pressing problems that affect every SENIOR PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 4 single person. On the whole, these selections bestowed me the capability to provide insightful and expert recommendations on many issues related to the health sciences. Having the knowledge about health-related focuses and analytic expertise, it qualifies me to participate in important discussions relating to health sciences and its administration on larger grounds and that with my humble suggestions and idea may provide the last puzzle to solve one of the most critical problems in the field of health sciences. The take-home assignments on Kendall's tau rank and Spearman's Rho rank definitely challenged me mentally. The intricacies of its principles compelled me to dig deeper into its mathematical foundation that turned out to be the key for me to understand its entire concept. Reflecting on these selections, I concede that my quantitative expertise needs a little improvement. Although, initially I got a perfect score on Kendall's and Spearman's rank, my quiz performance was just an average. Seen this way, I believe that it is highly imperative to not just look at its concept in a "numerical" way but instead, there is a need for us to experience the entire idea inside our thoughts so that we can relate to its principles and applications in a subliminal manner. That way, it is easier to apply it to the different problem solving and decision making task in the fields of health sciences. Health Sciences is a very broad field. It encompasses the various health-related concerns, be it on the physiological aspect or on the administrative aspects. While there are many facets that can be associated to health sciences, the principles that bind and manage them should be the same. Decisions made on problems related to health sciences play an extremely critical role in the well-being of so many citizens; hence, there is a higher preference of impeccability on the SENIOR PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 5 decision-making abilities of those who are in the administrative positions. The selections suggest that my quantitative expertise need more improvement and so as my ability to supply scientific method to problem solving and decision making in health science. After I completed my degree in Nursing, I started my career as a nurse for fifteen long years. When I started working on my Master's degree, I became a health science instructor. I came into the program nervous and uncertain if I would ever obtain the Master's degree considering that I have been out of school 14 years prior to this program. As a health professional, at the beginning of the study, I started to develop interest in the administration of health sciences. I have basic knowledge about the different facets of health sciences and its contributions to the society. Initially, during the start of the program, my interest on the new concepts and principles of health sciences and how it can be administered were all flared up. I have learned the many and different ways through which health sciences can be modified and make it suitable resolve numerous health-related concerns of the society. The experiments and research projects that I have conducted triggered my critical thinking and extensively improved my analytic expertise. For example, The New Mexico Medicaid and its Modernization plan and an in class presentation of cultural preference, it has given me the chance to explore and discover the hidden facts necessary to understand the existing problems in our society, especially in managing health insurance like Medicaid and all other health and medical related subject matters. Also, my research on The Jamaican Adolescent Study and one literature review on Father Presence matters allowed me to think independently and generate solutions that will respond to the many dilemmas that affect the children especially SENIOR PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 6 the adolescent who through time, due to certain factors including the lack of father presence in their childhood, developed promiscuity in them. Further, it did not only allow me to see the societal glitches and evil which are very rampant nowadays but on the positive note, it molded me into a completely different person with so much more to offer to other people. Collaborating and working with my professors and fellow graduate students increased my knowledge about my graduate degree with the addition of their individual ideas and advice. In the future days, I intend to use this degree to improve the administration of health sciences in our local community. Also, having the additional knowledge that I have earned from the graduate program, I aim to impart this knowledge to my students and peers by teaching them the proper way of dealing subject matters which are related to health sciences. I will also use this degree to participate in broader discussions that point toward creating a society that is more informed and capable of addressing common problems that directly affect them. On the whole, the program aided me to become a more responsible by training me to think self-reliantly and to ponder on the various issues in health sciences deeply. I learned that these common problems must not be interpreted glibly in a sense that instead of creating solutions, it may even help degenerate the existing undesirable conditions.
