Extract of sample "Four Polymers from Which Hydrogels Can Be Made"

It has no odor and is non-toxic to humans. It has excellent tensile strength and flexibility. It has high oxygen and aroma barrier properties. Its ability to absorb water increases its elongation and tearing strength. PVA is both degradable and soluble thus making it possible to be chemically decomposed to form intermediate products that are easier to dispose of (Gnanou & Fontanille 23).

Disadvantages: In the presence of moisture, its tensile strength decreases because water acts as a plasticizer. Uses: Polyvinyl Alcohol is used in making other polymers such as Polyvinyl Butyral. These polymers can be used in making safety glasses such as windshields for vehicles.

Disadvantage: If not disposed of properly, it will lead to contamination of water sources and soil.Application: The surfactants in detergents, found in Sodium Polyacrylate are efficient in binding hard water elements such as calcium and magnesium making them a choice Sequestering agent in detergents. Sodium polyacrylate is also used in making diapers and some brands of sanitary towels owing to their super absorbent ability (Gnanou & Fontanille 34).Acrylate Polymers:Advantages: Easily form polymers because they have highly reactive double bonds.

Disadvantages: They are non-biodegradable hence improper use can easily lead to environmental pollution.Application: Acrylate Polymer is used as a poisonous defense against marine phytoplankton protozoa (Gnanou & Fontanille 34).Copolymers:Advantages: They have a thermoplastic ability that makes it possible for them to be processed as a melt at high temperatures. They have the elastomeric ability. This enables it to regain its original shape even after stretching (Gnanou & Fontanille 44).Disadvantages: Burning Copolymers that have additives may cause the release of toxic gases into the atmosphere hence pollution. Uses: Copolymers are used in surgery to make scaffolds used for tissue repair and to make breast implants.
