Extract of sample "Techniques of Organic Chemistry"

The cyclohexene was removed from the flask by use of pipet. The mass of the cyclohexene was determined. The results proved that acid can be used to eliminate water from alcohol leaving behind the corresponding alkene (Weissberger, 23). One mole of cyclohexanol gives one mole of cyclohexene. The molecule weight of cyclohexanol = 100.4 while that of the cyclohexene is 82.15. The moles of cyclohexanol is calculated as 10.2x1 mole/100.4= 0.101796M; hence 0.101796x82.15/1=8.362g which is the theoretical mass of cyclohexene.

To find the actual Percent yield we divide the actual yield (grams) with the theoretical yield (grams) x 100%. Which is 4.2096/8.2177x100= 51.23%? The purpose of this experiment was to dehydrate cyclohexanol into cyclohexene by use of an acid catalyst. The experiment was successful because we manage to extract cyclohexene from the cyclohexanol.     One mole of cyclohexanol gives one mole of cyclohexene. The molecule weight of cyclohexanol = 100.4 while that of the cyclohexene is 82.15. The moles of cyclohexanol is calculated as 10.

2x1 mole/100.4= 0.101796M. 0.101796x82.15/1=8.362g which is the theoretical mass of cyclohexene. To find the actual Percent yield we divide the actual yield (grams) with the theoretical yield (grams) * 100%. 4.2096/8.2177x100= 51.23%
