Leadership in Business Organization

Introduction

In the recent past, most business entities have been taking a great deal of time in structuring their leadership roles to align with the achievement of already set goals of the company. This is due to the rising concern that high percentage of business companies always failed due to reluctance or rather incoherent roles of leaders in those respective companies. Storey (2016) argues that leadership entails clarity of vision, sharing of the vision, providing adequate information on the knowledge as well as the methods to be applied in realizing the vision. Besides, he further notes that efficient coordination and management of conflict of interest within a business entity is another role of leadership that always dictates future of the business organization. Essentially, when it comes to achievement of the business success, many might attests that the strategy that a business has is the most appropriate ingredient in attaining the success of the business but that is not always automatic. This is because formulation of strategy is just one part of the entire range of reasons of success in a company. Therefore, leadership is one of the major reasons for the success as well as achievement of goals in a company.

Importance of Business leadership

Initially, businesses were more concerned with factors of production such as capital, land, labor and entrepreneurship. However, this is not significant in the current business world as the aspect of leadership has emerged to be a major factor that seemingly makes everything work together. Besides, coherent leadership makes all the factors of production in a business to be effective. It is for this reason that most companies having been allocating part of their finances in training employees and integrating the new developments in leadership theory that aids in creating a more effective working environment. García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo and Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez (2012) contends that almost all established as well as developing business companies in the world are practicing the concept of servant leadership. This is because application of servant leadership in business has been showing a tremendous achievement of goals and objectives of a business organization. The authors further argues that there exists five distinct quality traits of a servant leaders and these traits include;

Character

A servant leader ought to portray an exemplary character in the sense that he ought to be trusted by employees and have clear records of honesty and integrity (García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo & Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez, 2012). In addition, a good leader “walks the talk” meaning that he earns a good reputation from other employees since he cares for others. Thus, true authority emanates from respect that one demonstrates through good character and trustworthiness in leading a group of people. Therefore, a servant leader needs to be someone whose ways can be emulated and one who does what they say or believe in.

Communication

The art of clear communication is a prerequisite that a servant leadership must have in any organization. In order to communicate directives that steer the success of the company, there must be harmonious relationship between a leader and the employees (García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo & Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez, 2012). This will enable efficient flow of information between workers and leaders that further result into the efficiency of achievement of the business goals. Thus, servant leaders are expected to respond to questions, address concerns as well as listen with empathy.

Direction

Having uniqueness in giving direction on the errands in a business entity is a feature that a good leader ought to portray. For instance, being unique in operation of the activities of company gives a business entity a competitive advantage of other companies operating on the similar services and products (García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo & Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez, 2012). In essence, a good leader ought to bring impressive changes in the businesses entity.

Optimistic

Best leaders are source of positive energy in a business organization. This is because they ought to be intrinsically helpful and concerned about the welfare of others. This dictates that a good leader will always find a solution to any tough emerging decision of a company, always reassure, and inspire employees towards the solution of such tough issues in the business (García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo & Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez, 2012). A servant leader has to stay focused and hopeful as this gives the employees zeal to work hard in line with the goals of the particular organization.

Honesty

Servant leaders always treat people how they would like them also to be treated. Thus, they tend to be extremely ethical and have a belief that honesty, reliability and effort are sources of foundation of success of a business entity. By this trait, it means that a leader does not act shady or give the employees or other partners a reason to question their word.

Significance of leadership

Hockett, Creger, Smith, Young, Carter, Dillingham and Pellegrini (2013) assert that if any person has heard about a successful company or business, then the achievements emanate from effective leaders in those respective companies. This is because leadership of effective and well-trained leaders is vital in realizing the success of a company. Moreover, the current emergence of transformation of leaders to servant leaders is invaluable when it comes to formulation as well as communication of emerging strategic directions. For instance, good communication skills and motivation of employees has been one of the significant ways of maintaining unity in a company as any form of motivation offered on the employee’s increases their dedication to work. Thus, training of leadership skills in a company is essential in making sure that leaders are well equipped with necessary skills that looking into achievement of the goals of the company.

Leadership focus

Incontestably, transformation that the world has been undergoing concerning the application of technology in every sector of economy has also transformed leadership focus in many business entities. For instance, leadership focus was more inclined on speed and flexibility. However, this trend is nowadays considered outdated as many leadership theories have shifted with respect to the shifting landscape of technology. Thus, the global focus, necessity of digitalism as well as the socio-political factors has made leaders to be agile and resilient. Moreover, the constantly changing business environment in the current society posits numerous challenges that when not adequately solved can affect operation of a business. According to Mattson, von Thiele Schwarz, Hasson, Hellgren and Tafvelin (2015), leaders who have the ability go through the emerging business challenges are emotionally intelligent. This proves that they can adapt very fast to complex shift in the business operation and help other employees in hastening the achievement and winning the challenges that appear in the business. Therefore, leaders have to focus on solution of challenging situation in a business and they bloom in spite of adversities that may emanate from different the environment they operate.

Leadership and delegation

One point that always brings out the difference between leaders and servant leaders is the delegation of duties. For instance, a leader will command an employee to performed an errand while a servant leader will help an employee in performing a task by giving him or her an example. The method of delegating duties will differ in the sense that a servant leader will have an advantage of identifying people who can be the next leaders of the company. This further, boosts the next career trajectory of workers and the entire management of the company (Zyngier, & Owen, 2013).

According to the argument of Robinson (2012), mode of delegating duties to workers will either heighten the relationship between employees and leaders or ruin it. This is because human nature tends to be efficient in an environment where there exists a sense of belonging. For instance, delegating of more hard tasks to employees without giving them directives on how to go about it increases restlessness among the workers that further culminate to compromised provision of goods as well as services to customers. In essence, perfect relationship between the workers and leaders in a business firm is one feature that heightens the achievement of set goals and objectives of a company. In the context of delegation of duty in a business entity, Kunkel, Lehrmann, Vergare and Laura Weiss Roberts (2013) offers an advice by stating that top management leaders in a business firm are binding factors of all workers in the company. This states that despite how a business firm can be proficient in having other factors of production, labor as a factor of production is much important concerning the relationship between workers in a company. Thus, without the adequate relationship between the workers, the company is bound to register a loss that affects its future thriving.

Conclusion

In view of the above discussion, leadership is an organization behavior that acts as source of all decisions made in a company. A failure of a company shows that the leadership of that company is incoherent. Leaders have to portray high standards of integrity and honesty that will convince others that he is best fit to lead a sector in a company. This takes some time since gaining confidence of other people is a process that entails understanding and earning confidence of fellow workmates. Besides, leaders have to be equipped with efficient communication skills that make workers to take away their personal interest and work on the interest of the company. Thus, leadership is a major reason that dictates the success or failure of a business entity.
