Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Name Date Course Summary report from Mike Kamarck to Wendy Kouba briefing the objectives at hand Sine 2007, the company has been facing a number of challenges which have negative impact on the revenue collection and profitability of the company. The productivity of the company has been plummeting and this has been a serious concern to the company. The product pipeline of the company was also drying due to the drop in profitability. The company failed to introduce new products in the market (Oliver, 2). This is because the introduction of the new products in the market requires a lot of investments. A lot of research is also required for the purpose of developing a new drug and the drop in profitability of the company cannot support it. It is also important to note that the company is also facing a lot of competition in the market. This is due to the rules on the development of the generic drugs. The company lacks an international patent which impacts negatively on the products of the company. This is because it affects the profitability of the company in the i8nternational scene. The main competitors of the company were mainly based in India and China at the international level. Other companies were also allowed to develop the same products as that of the company and sell it at the international market. This is problem also increased the competition from the Indian and Chinese firms. The patent for two of its drugs that generate a high amount of revenue was also coming to an end. The two drugs were top performers in the company in terms of revenue generation. On the other hand, a competing firm has already begun the process of developing the generic drugs. This is an indication that the company is likely to loose more profit and market share. The company thus decided to put in place measures that will ensure that it reduces the operation costs by 25% (Oliver, 3). This is for the purpose of ensuring that it is able to continue operating. The measures have led to the reduction of the production in all the production plants of the company. The company is no longer focusing on making profits at the moment. Much of the operations are aimed at reducing the operational cost in order to maintain its stability in the market. The main target of the company is thus cost reduction during the production process. The company has been able to trim $40 million which amounts to 20% of the target of the company (Oliver, 2014). This is an indication that more needs to be done. Over the next year, the company intends to achieve a reduction of 200 million. In order to ensure that the target is reached, Wendy has to ensure that operational efficiency has been enhanced. On the other hand, it is also important to ensure that the paperwork should be eliminated in order to eliminate most of the procedures that are time consuming. It is also recommended that the company should ensure that automation of services is achieved in order to enhance on its productivity. The automation of services will ensure that most of the manual operations are eliminated and hence reducing the costs. Training of the personnel will also be required from time to time in order to enable the company to meet the goals and objectives. It also recommended that working closely with the top managers should be enhanced. This will improve on the processes of the company. It is also important to ensure that an effective communication mechanism has been put in place. Directive letter from Wendy Kouba to site leaders (MD’s and QH’s) To: MD’s and HQ’s Date: RE: CHALLENGE FACING THE COMPANY The company currently undergoing tough times and it faces a lot of challenges. The competition facing the company is stiff and the patent of the top products have already expired. The competitors are already making generic drugs which impacts negatively on the sales of the products of the company. As you are aware, the company has been implementing measures to ensure that it solves the problems. The measure that was initially put in place led to the trimming of $40 million. However, this was only 20% of the operating cost. The company therefore requires putting in place more measures that will ensure that the cost is drastically reduced. The company targets to reduce $200 million over the next year. Mr. Mike Kamarck who was the original champion of the cost reduction measures will not be involved in the process. This will play an essential role in ensuring that the organization is able to continue reducing its costs. This is considering that the methodology was able to reduce some costs although it did not meet the required targets. Frequent training will also be conducted for the purposes of equipping the leaders with the skills and knowledge that is required for the purposes of improving on their operations. The success of the organization in reducing on the costs will be highly dependant on the efforts of the Managing Directors and Quality Heads. On the other hand, it is recommended that a benchmark should be developed for the purpose of determining whether the changes implemented are making progress. This will assist the management at the site to work towards attained the required goals and objectives. The presence of a benchmark will also be useful to the managers in terms of determining the corrections that they are supposed to make in order to achieve the goals of cost reduction.
