The paper “Liquor Licensing for Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar” is an actual example of the case study on business. Liquor licensing is essential for all enterprises dealing in the sale or supply of alcohol- whether it is a club, bar, or any other group holding a special event. In New Zealand, there are four types of licenses. Each kind of license has its own particular application form, an applicable non-refundable fee, as well as other requirements for supplementary documentation. The four types of licensing include an on the license, an off-license, a club license, and a special license. They apply for different kinds of businesses. A large holding needs to have at least one or more of the aforementioned licenses.

Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar has applied for an Off Licence to enable it to sell, supply, and deliver alcohol to be consumed outside of the premises. This includes alcohol and tastings that are taken away by the patrons. The restaurant also has a Club Licence to enable it to sell and supply alcohol to its patrons that use the club facility during weekends as well as those who hold special clubbing events on particular occasions.  This is supported by the organizations On Licence that enables it to sell alcohol on a general basis within the premises. Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar also has a Special Licence to enable it to sell or supply alcohol within its premises for the entire duration during any special event. This means that the facility is authorized to sell alcohol in various places including its bar section and even outdoor catering facilities as long as they are covered by the current licenses.

It should be noted that the common perception has been that once an establishment obtains a license to sell alcohol it can offer the same in any way it deems fit. Otherwise, this is a misconception because alcohol that is sold outside a premise needs a different kind of licensing from that sold within a premise. Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar has separated its licensing to avoid the misconceptions that surround the use of alcohol since it is very common for outsiders in outdoor functions to purport to have purchased alcohol from the restaurant and this is a loophole for selling alcohol to underage people. For this reason, the alcohols offered by the facility’ bar are clearly marked to ensure that it is accountable for all alcohols sold as take-aways to its patrons.

My stay at Zoe’s Restaurant and Bar enabled me to understand various codes of practice that are very unique. For instance, a certified manager must be on duty at all times when liquor is being delivered to the public. Should the certified manager be absent for any reason, a licensee is allowed to appoint an acting or temporary manager. This is a good point to ensure that alcohol is handled only by qualified personnel. Where such a measure not in place, it would be possible for unqualified people to handle t alcohol and thus make it end up in the wrong hands, for instance being sold to children.
