Article replies: Fisher: answer with yes … Robertson (Mbubi): answer with yes … Al-Suwaidi: answer with yes, but … Outline: Why should consumers care about workers situation? What improvement will happen if consumers care about the workers situations? What disadvantages and problems may happen if the situations against the workers are ignored? What should be done to reduce these occurrences? Although they are from different continents, both authors of these articles present similar issues from the perspectives of three different nations. Because of the differing level of value with respect to workers rights in some countries, key phenomena are realized based upon region and nation that is being studied. For instance, in many nations, child labor is common. Additionally, women are often treated badly with harassment at work; however, they are forced to remain in such positions just as a means to support their families. This phenomena attracted writers’ attention to this particular topic. Although Fisher explained the situation with Colombia and Ecuador workers and how they have been treated, he did not write about the country’s unique economic situation. Comparatively, Robertson agreed by quoting Mr. Mbubi words in his speech in TEDx, where Mbubi talked about the situation of people of Congo and the mineral workers,. Yet, Robertson did not expand the idea by providing information of how people of the Congo generally lived. The ultimate question then becomes, in a country where the economy is stable, should consumers consider workers rights and what is happening to them? Having consumers consider how workers in other countries are treated is more adoptable than making them take an action toward these occurrences. Yet, one must consider what will happen if the consumers take a step to solve those workers situations, or what will happen if they just ignore what happening to those oppressed workers. Taking a step towards being part of helping such activities will help the worker’s quality of life. For example, as Fisher agreed when he addressed in his article, the free trade agreement between United State and Colombia will bring benefits to both sides. For consumers, the flour will be cheaper for them; additionally, the workers of Colombia will have better and more definitive labor standards put in place in order to keep their rights safe. Additionally, having such agreements in countries where the workers are oppressed, will also bring benefits to the country itself. Even Robertson agreed when he quoted from Mr. Mbubi. Ultimately, stopping authoritarianism with respect to the workers and giving them the chance to be part of what they are doing to help their own country will bring benefits to country and the workers; as opposed all the benefits goes to other people such as the armed conflict in Congo (Robertson 1). Overall, taking a step from consumers to consider what is happening to other workers in other countries might bring advantages from both sides. From the economic side as well as the shareholder satisfaction within the production side, both can be maximized by applying this particular approach. Maybe not all the consumers will take this step, since they live a satisfactory life and everything around them is generally available. Moreover, some might say “It is not my issue to solve”, but making them see and feel how those workers are suffering may help to open the door to be part of the solution. On the other hand, what issues or facts might be happening by just ignoring what is happening to the oppressed workers. Since this problem became serious in some countries and no actions were taking toward them, the group of oppressed workers increased over time. Another element that contributes to the overall level of abuse that is evidenced is the fact that many of the workers that take such jobs are already disenfranchised and desperate for a salary; as such, the likelihood that they will be taken advantage of is exponentially increased. If the consumers did not consider their rights as human beings, the consumers’ reputation will be in danger. For example, the winning Oscar movie “Life of Pi”, won a prize with the best visual effects, but the artists who made the visual effect were not recognized in the event, and this frustration made them to stand up together to protest (Tickle 1). This reaction from the artists might also happen to any oppressed workers around the world, for such reply from the workers to the industry, it will damage their image in society and by that they are going to lose more in the market because of their reputation. Additionally, when Fisher addressed this in his article, he noted that agreement alone with the country in question may not solve anything. This is of course due to the fact that a host of complicating global economic factors help to precipitate the damages that have been denoted. Adding to that, that Mbubi also agreed there will be disadvantages from keeping just mineral workers under the armed conflict. This is due to the fact that there will be no benefits to the people of Congo. Overall, financial loss and reputation image might be effected of the consumer did not consider the workers right and if they did not recognize their effort. Therefore, having the consumers be part of solution toward the workers is something concerning general humanitarian standards and/or the Golden Rule (Fisher 1). Having general knowledge about what is currently happening with regards to the problems that the workers in global market are facing is a fundamental tool in being able to seek to ameliorate and understanding these issues. By having an overview on the situation it can be observed that there is a common point between all factors and situations, and this point is the customers attitudes and choices that are displayed. Customers can play roles in solving the problem, delaying a solution, or ultimately prolonging the problem. Fisher supports this point by suggesting that if the customers can take a moment to consider where their product came from, and how those products were delivered to them and under what conditions. As such, Robertson agrees with Fisher stating that if the customers think about the workers who made those products, and if they spread the word with their families and friends this could be a starting point to a bigger solution. Fisher, reply on Robertson, this is sure a great way of expanding the word, because there might be a person with power who can make a change to start solving the problem, such as what Gorge Bush did with Colombian flower industries. Regardless of the means by which such a situation can be sought to be fixed, it is without argument that many of the labor practices and workers rights that are currently exhibited are far below the standards of the developed world.
