Introduction: Jennifer started her career at the restaurant from scratch. From an early stage, she grew to be the junior manager of the restaurant where she took on many challenges. A SWOT analysis of the restaurant along with her career in the management of the restaurant will be conducted during the course of this paper. 2. Strengths: One of the biggest strengths of the restaurant which the case study “A Midsummer Day’s Nightmare” depicts, is that the work environment of the restaurant complimented Jennifer’s career favorably and encouraged the employees overall.

Not only this, as Jennifer quotes, it was fun to work for the restaurant in a friendly environment. Along with other perks such as discounts on food items and free food for the management, Jennifer implies that the management kept its employees motivated by “encouraging friendly ties and organized activities outside of work”. Because of a motivated workforce and a friendly environment, hurdles such as restoring supplies through other outlets could be overcome informally rather than in a centralized way which would be time consuming and harmful for both the short-term sales and the image of the restaurant. 3. Weaknesses: The restaurant was not properly equipped and Jennifer claims that because of this, she faced a lot of problems during the operations of the restaurant.

Also, the procurement process of the restaurant was not efficient as there were times when the restaurant would run out of certain supplies. Secondly, the restaurant was already going through a financial crisis because of being small. Despite this, the restaurant allowed free food to its management without any supervision to the extent that Jennifer explains that she could exploit this perk as well. Besides this, most of the employees were from neighboring high-schools and were on friendly terms which would leave the restaurant vulnerable to exploitation of perks by the employees, resulting in cash flow problems. 4. Opportunities: The restaurant presented a remarkable learning opportunity for Jennifer as she was trusted with the operations even when her supervisors were not present.

The restaurant also presented strong growth opportunities to Jennifer’s career. Promotions were given from time-to-time to keep the employees’ motivational level high. 5. Threats: A major threat to which this restaurant is exposed to is inadequate liquidity. Jennifer noticed that the restaurant was small and had trouble generating profit which had rendered into the infrastructure of the restaurant. The equipment had become sub-standard and needed constant maintenance and the owing to the upper management’s ignorance, Jennifer was asked to repair it herself and as she had no technical knowledge of the equipment, the restaurant must have failed to provide a quality dining experience to the customers.

Secondly, the restaurant seems to be operating in a decentralized way with lack of organization and defined S.O.Ps. This has also created a problem for Jennifer once when someone from her team forgot to put the freezer back on after when the supplies were stored. Such problems are inevitable when there is lack of organization. Works Cited Lindsay Sawyer, E Sawyer Financial, and John Melnyk. “A Midsummer’s Day Nightmare”. University of Winnipeg. Print
