Download file to see previous pages Microsoft’s flagship product, Windows, is the standard operating system for any IBM PC. There are alternatives such as Linux or Mac OSX however Microsoft’s Windows has remained a dominant force in the market. This has given the company a high degree of recognition as people become accustomed to the system's procedures and processes. It can be very difficult for some people to make the leap from one operating system to another.
Since Microsoft’s inception in the 70s, they have grown from strength to strength. There estimated current revenue is $53.4 billion showing the enormous achievements of this company. This familiarity between product and customer has been solidified over the years as people have been exposed to Microsoft products [1, 2].
Microsoft has also branched out into computer games with the launch of the Xbox 360 into the market. This is removed from the familiar office or home use PC as a platform with no other application than to play games. This product hit the market before its competitors the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii consoles. These markets have been split since the release of this trio, but Nintendo is emerging as the best solo player console. Microsoft’s on-line gaming experience is considered the best in most circles as the platform supports many genres of games that are traditionally released onto the PC.
In fact, the Nintendo Wii has the advantage of being able to engage the player in a more physical rather than purely mental way. This has set it apart and opened up the computer game market to families and other people who wouldn’t naturally have been drawn to gaming. Microsoft has already reacted to this situation and is currently developing a project, Natal. This is an extension, or improvement, on the Xbox 360 design.
