The company is listed on the bourses of the London Stock exchange FTSE 500, Hong Kong stock exchange, Bermuda Stock exchange and the Paris stock exchange. HSBC has about two lakh twenty thousand shareholders in one hundred and nineteen countries. The company has ADR's (American Depository Receipt) listed on the New York Stock Exchange. HSBC provides a host of financial services including personal finance, corporate banking, commercial banking, investment banking, and private banking. The company serves over 100 million personal customers and about three million commercial clients.

The company has three lakh twenty thousand employees on active payroll speaking over a hundred different languages across the globe. The total assets of the company were about US$ 2500 billion as of December 2008. HSBC has a pedigree which can be defined as highly unique with most of its principal companies operating for over a century. The company has over the years built up a strong corporate image and a good positioning in the minds of the customer. Its familiar logo is seen worldwide as a symbol of trust and quality which signifies the reasons for the success of the company.

The company operates in diverse geographies and has a host of products to cater to the diverse needs of the customers. The company has adopted a think globally and act local strategy with the tagline of the company being “The World's Local Bank”. (HSBC About us). 2.1 Global financial crisis The economy worldwide is going through an uncertain phase. It originated in the year 2007 and gained full momentum in September 2008 with the fall of the financial giant like Lehman Brothers.
