Executive summary The dynamics in the business world have given way to many business strategies. Some of the strategies that have emerged for improving performance in competitive business environments is giving of awards. The EFQM excellence model has been expressed as one of the most effective strategies for improving business performance. This paper has been developed to demonstrate the influence of EFQM excellence model in the UAE business world. Dubai Quality Award has been used to facilitate the discussion of the influence of organizing award events on quality improvement. Introduction The business environment has grown quite competitive in the past few decades. In response to the increased competition, several management models have been advanced to aid in navigating the competitive business world. The advancement in technology and development of the education system across the world has contributed significantly to the increase in technology. Apparently, the development of different education systems across the world has diversified knowledge acquisition in the business field. Essentially, the diversification of the business knowledge has led to the establishment of effective management models such as the EFQM excellence model. The EFQM excellence model has gained widespread use in the UAE. Basically, the EFQM excellence model can be described as an organized framework adopted by organizations to achieve prosperity objectives. The model has been credited for aiding organization in the struggle towards excellence. In essence, the model keeps the organization on point in matters of goal achievement. Terterov&Ghurfat(2006) states that there are various awards that have been instituted to motivate organizations within the UAE to continue with the struggle to excellent performance. The Dubai Quality Award is among the most effective motivation programs in the UAE that record a huge participation of various organizations and the government sector. The focus of this study is to evaluate the contribution of the Dubai Quality Award to the performance of Aptec Holdings Limited. Company’s dedication to the excellence journey Aptec Holdings Limited is among the largest distributors in Dubai and also one of the fastest growing companies in the past few years. A critical evaluation of the company’s performance reveals the Dubai Quality Award has played a significant role in its success. It can be observed that the Dubai Quality Award forces firms to produce products or services that are of high quality(Fisher, 2010). The journey to excellence or the Aptec Holdings Limited has had several challenges, especially in the initial stages. The ICT sector has grown quite dynamic and make competition in the industry very high. For this reason, rising to the top ranks of the industry has not been an easy task or the company. Implementation of the model The corporation has invested in research and technology development enormously. In essence, the company has digitized most of its services to enhance improved customer service and timely delivery. In addition, the company values regular employee training on matters of customer relations, delivery techniques, use of new technologies and many others. Therefore, it can be observed that the company has established unlimited mechanisms tailored to add value to the customers. It is imperative to identify that adding value to the customers aids in building loyalty and, therefore, contributes to efficiency in the wrong run. The Dubai Quality Award focuses on various aspects when rewarding organizations and the key among them is customer satisfactions. For this reason, Aptec Holdings Limited is committed to enhancing consumers’ satisfaction and value addition to remain eligible for the awards. The Aptec Holdings Limited is known for its concern for sustainable development. The company has established various strategies that are meant to enhance conservation of the environment. In addition, the company sponsors various events that are concerned with sensitizing the human race on the dangers of environmental pollution. The massive use of online platforms is a clear platform that the company is determined to promote clean development in its various lines of business. In essence, the company has a promising future since the world of science and technology continues to develop day after day. In this regard, the company has a promising future for other development since it keeps current with the emerging technologies. The company has a manageable number of employees who are committed to ensuring that all the goals of the organization are achieved within the given timelines. The company recently acquired Tech Data's components and enterprise business to expand its activities and boost its competitive in the IT distribution services. The Aptec Holdings Limited has laid a diverse infrastructure for implementing the efficiency model. For instance, the company has partnered with various foreign IT companies to facilitate the exchange of experience and skills. In essence, the company has centered its major concern on leadership development and employees empowerment to facilitate full implementation of the efficiency strategies. Moreover, the company has devised a motivation strategy for employees to enhance improved performance and positive outcomes. The company has about three hundred employees who perform different tasks. The company has trained its employees on the virtue of maintaining a good relationship with customers and the members of the public as well. Apparently, one of the most important aspects of the EFQM excellence model is recognition of people(Hakes, 2007). Basically, an organization should focus not only on meeting customers’ needs, but also the welfare of the contemporary society. It is worth noting that the society forms the basis for a company’s expansion. In this regard, companies should never forget that the society is a responsibility. Strategies of the implementation The success of Aptec Holdings Limited has not been that easy. The company’s mode of operation has evolved from producing traditional-based services the modern services. The full use of the modern technology has seen the company develop in various ways. For instance, the use of various internet platforms has made interaction with clients very easy. Actually, the modern technology has enhanced the timely conveyance of important information to the various organs of the company. Moreover, the company prides itself with high levels of innovation and creativity, especially among the top officials. The use of computer technology for research has been identified as one of the basic factors that promote innovation in the organization. In essence, the company’s employees are allowed free internet access to for research and refreshment. Apparently, the internet provides a rich information in whatever field of occupation. The Dubai Quality Award usually recognizes the most innovative organizations by rewarding them handsomely. In this regard, Aptec Holdings Limited has emphasized on creativity and innovation in all its dealings to increases the chances of benefiting from the Dubai Quality Award. Benefits of implementation The successful implementation of the EFQM excellence model by Aptec Holdings Limited has resulted in unlimited benefits. For instance, the company’s profit margin has improved at a very high rate. Moreover, the company has been able to expand its operations and also acquired some other companies in the same line of business(Baron, Hinley& Great Britain., 2005). In essence, the improved financial performance has enabled the company penetrate the IT business with massive power. Before the implementation of the excellence model, the company used to experience frequent financial shortages that almost drove it out of business. In addition, the company could not execute any expansion plans before the implementation of the model since it was experiencing leadership inferiority. Presently, the company has been able to tackle the past experience and advanced to reach the outer world. Apparently, the company has become a giant in the IT distribution sector. The company aspires to penetrate the international market deeply to reach as many countries as possible. The mission of the firm is offering proficient services to the customers and the society at large. Challenges The implementation of the model has not been easy for the organization. Several challenges were encountered during the implementation process, but they terminated the process. For instance, the employees took a considerable period to adjust working with the model. Moreover, restructuring the organizational structure of the company was a costly process. In essence, the process of restructuring the organizational culture of the company took some time. These and other challenges hindered immediate benefits of the model. However, talent development and employees determination have facilitated successful implementation of the model. Research has shown that the company had talented employees since inception, and this has been one of its core competitive advantages in the industry. Several studies have shown that talent is a source of intrinsic motivation among employees in the various organization(International Business Publications, 2012). Intrinsic motivation has proved to be the best approach to promote performance among workers. In essence, when people are motivated internally, they work efficiently with no supervision since their major goal is to fulfill their internal desires. In this regard, the organization should research their workforce to identify the sources of intrinsic motivation for each employee. Once the source has been identified, the employees should be provided with an environment that facilitates the development of internal motivation. Conclusion The implementation of the model has been of great importance to the performance of the company and economic development of the UAE. The business sector is the major contributor to economic development in the UAE through taxations and infrastructural development. In summary, the EFQM excellence model is an economic booster to the countries and sectors that have implemented it fully. The outstanding performance portrayed by the companies and sectors that have fully implemented the model should be a challenge to other companies and sectors using models that are not of economic benefit. In essence, the government sectors and business entities should develop effective management structures to enhance improved profits and economic development.
