Professor Clayton Christensen invented a term of art known as Disruptive innovation, as a strategy to be employed in businesses (“Disruptive Innovation”, n.d.). Professor in his disruptive innovation explains that a service or a product can move up relentlessly in the market from the bottom after taking an initial root at the bottom of the market in simple applications, and thereby to displace the competitors that are established. Many companies and organizations tend to produce goods or services that are too sophisticated, expensive and even complicated for most customers to afford in the market. Through this, these companies ensure very high profits for their goods and services. This makes the goods and services only available for a certain group of people who can afford them. This innovation involves the production of these complicated and sophisticated goods or services in a more simple way that can make them accessible to the people who are found at the bottom of the market (“Michael Porter and Clayton Christensen Are Both Wrong About Finding the Future of Business Education”, n.d.).
This method increases the number of customers who can now access the goods and services, and it mainly targets new customers rather than those who have already been there. Through this method, a company can rise and gain a competitive advantage at the lower level because it can reach to customers who are not attended to by the other established companies (“Disruptive Innovation”, n.d.). On the other hand, Professor Michael Porter argues in his integrative innovation that modernization around the edges should be done, but at the same time, the core should be preserved.
