ver, the Chinese tend to celebrate their birthdays before the actual birth date and omit celebration of certain birthdays depending on one’s gender. 2. Justify that this activity is not part of your culture by describing how specific elements of it are different from your way of life (think symbols, language, values and beliefs, norms, artifacts, etc.). The activity was different especially in the foods that were served. Additionally, one month after birth is not considered significant in my culture.

My culture celebrate birthday by eating foods such as sugar, which are of no significant symbol other than indicating joy associated with birth. However, most of the food served in Chinese birthdays is symbolic. For example, noodles and red eggs are served to symbolize longevity. Another different was that the child’s family was the ones who bought us gift although we were free to give gifts such as food, gold, and silverwares. In our culture, only the people attending the birthday buy gifts, which are not specified.

I wanted to buy a silver watch for the baby but I was warned that timekeeping devices symbolize bad lack and are indicative of one seeking death. Ethnocentrism refers to the belief that one’s culture or ethnic group is superior to others (Ferrante 2012:3.6). Thought that reflected ethnocentrism include the belief that it was unreasonable to prevent me from giving the baby a watch. I also felt like it was meaningless to dye an egg red just because the color symbolizes good luck. After all, there are no red eggs.

Cultural relativism is the view that all cultural beliefs, ethics, and customs should be regarded from the viewpoint of that culture (Ferrante 2012:3.5). During the activity, I appreciated activities such as the food served by the Chinese and made me consider their culture as unique.
