Three companies that serve the world, which are Samsung, Microsoft, and Dell, are the leading manufacturers in the technology industry. They focus their efforts on manufacturing technology that makes the life of the average person entertaining and easy. In order for their business the keep solvent, they have to continue to manufacture innovative products, as well as maintain a sound function and communication structure within their companies, as well as with those with which they work. Samsung has created flash memory by using process technology that enables data speeds to be accelerated. They also manufacture televisions, storage devices, mobile phones, office equipment--like computers, notebook PCS, monitors, printers, and LCD displays--photography equipment, surveillance equipment, and household appliances. Much of this is usually produced in Korea, and it is shipped to other countries to be sold. Communication is done between staff in the department via memos, messages, meetings, conferences, and phone calls. The HR department communicates primarily through email and phone correspondence, as well as in person. The general manager communicates with them via the same means. The marketing department communicates through the use of memos, emails, phone correspondence, and personal meetings with other staff to determine their next steps to take as far as getting products out to the public. The marketing department also uses press releases to give news to the public about new product releases. Once the marketing department and other company staff meet to determine what their next product lines will be, the production staff is then notified, and they work on producing what will appeal to the public. Samsung corresponds with other companies located in different countries, such as between Korea and the US, to distribute their products as affiliates. The affiliates keep in communication with the main company through email and phone. The function and communication structures of Samsung are very solid, cut, and dry. Staff within the headquarters can communicate with one another quickly and efficiently, as they can meet within offices and hold conferences should the need arise. Disputes within the company can be resolved quickly, and sudden changes can be communicated without much delay. The only weakness that can be seen is that their manufacturers are in Korea, which can present some issues with language barriers. Other than that, Samsung seems to be very well run. Then, there is Microsoft. Microsoft is a manufacturer and distributor of hardware and software for the computer and mobile phone. They manufacture the Windows operating systems, office suites, server software, such as windows servers and business servers, security suites, developer software, entertainment products, such as the Xbox and other gaming software and consoles, and design and developer tools. Microsoft even manufactures software that can be used with Macintosh computers. Education is also a value to this company, as they manufacture a wide variety of educational software, such as office for students, Healthvault, Autocollage, and Streets and Trips, just to name a few. Microsoft has a little of everything for everyone. Because Microsoft is spread out all over the globe—manufacturers being in china and India and the headquarters being in the United States, the phone and the Internet are their main sources of communication. When a communication needs to take place between production staff and the rest of the department concerning the product lines, phone calls and messaged are received from headquarters. In the headquarters, however, communication takes place at meetings, as well as through the phone and messages. This is how the HR staff, general managers, the senior manager, and the marketing staff typically communicate with one another. Microsoft also allows some of their employees to telecommute. In these cases, these employees communicate via the phone and Internet, being conference into meetings if need be. Then, there are the call centers, which are located in different parts of the world, such as India, and the Philippines. These call centers correspond with the headquarters in the same way that telecommuters would. Microsoft is the largest manufacture of hardware and software all over the world. Because of this, they work with thousands of businesses worldwide who distribute their products to customers. These businesses are able to communicate with the main headquarters, which is in the USA, via telephone email correspondence, or via contact forms on their websites. These businesses can also create online accounts which enable them to communicate via message or chat support features that are contained in the account interfaces. When analyzing the function of communication structure of Microsoft, we can see that there are a number of strengths and weaknesses. The strengths are that people can communicate comfortably in their own environments, such as the telecommuters and those working overseas, which will enable them to communicate better due to the fact they feel at ease. Furthermore, communication is quick and easy, as it can be done easily with a few clicks of a mouse or presses of a button. If a problem should ever arise, communication is available, no matter the time of day or night. Now, there are some notable weaknesses in this communication structure. First of all, due to communication being spread all over, it is easy for miscommunications to occur, since a vast number of people are communicating with one another. In addition, language barriers may present a problem. While there is always room for improvement, Microsoft is doing very well. Finally, there is Dell. Dell is a manufacturer of almost the same products as Samsung. Some of the products that dell manufactures are software for the computer, computer hardware, computers and laptops, storage devices, and other PC accessories. These products are typically made in China. Dell communicates on a large scale, similar to that of Microsoft. Communications within the main headquarters takes place through the use of memos, email correspondences, phone calls, and meetings, should any be needed. Dell also has call centers spread out all over the United States, as well as in other parts of the world, such as in India. When communication needs to take place between these call centers, phone calls and email correspondence are usually the methods of choice. The same goes for communicating with production staff, since products are produced in China, and it is quite difficult to have personal meetings overseas. As far as the geographic locations of Dell’s communication, it spans out over the globe. Dell not only communicates between countries, such as India, the united States, and China; communication also takes place in many other countries over the globe, as resellers distribute their products, such as in Europe, North America Africa, Asia, Australia and South America. When analyzing the function and communication structure of Dell, we can see that it is solid in the fact that they can communicate quickly through the use of modern technology; however, being that Dell is spread out all over the globe, problems with communication can occur. Language barriers might get in the way of getting points across, which can cause communication problems and even disputes, and there can sometimes be a delay in communication, as can sometimes occur when working over a large space with a vast number of people. Their structure does need a bit of work; however, Dell is thriving nonetheless, serving millions of people all over the world.
