Download file to see previous pages Looking at the aspect of temperature, the paper holds that snails the optimum temperature with which snails moves the most will correspond to temperatures common in cool evenings i.e. warm but below room temperature.
The snail was placed first on a horizontal surface with water being place some distance away and then next place on the top of a vertical surface with water at the bottom. The time taken for the snail to move towards the water was then recorded. Since both the vertical and horizontal distances were equal, it was then possible to carry out a comparison of the speed of the snail. In the next experiment, the snails were placed in both warm and cold water and their behavior was recorded. The rate of movement as well as the extent of movement was then recorded and compared.
From the experiment, the snail moved 6cm in 50 seconds (0.12 cm/s) vertically while in the horizontal position the snail moved 5.5cm in 50 seconds (0.11 cm/s). From our experiment, we find that the snail moves faster when travelling horizontally than vertically. The second experiment also revealed a lot about the nature of snails. From the experiment, we found out that the snails moved more while in warm water and less in the cold water (they mainly retreated into their shells).
The shell is the most prominent feature of all snails. The shell protects the snail from both its predators as well as adverse weather, the shell is also vital in helping the snail conserve moisture. In land, the shell usually hampers the movement of the snail however in water its shape affords the snail a measure of buoyancy thus making it easier for the snail to move.
