Hairu, Wang Thomas Meixner Biology 30/4 Natural hazards Natural hazards refer to extreme weather conditions that affect people, infrastructures,as well as the environment. Hazards are commonly described as the adverse effects presented by different events on the environment, which subsequently affect the individuals residing within the environment. Natural disasters differ from hazards in that the disasters refer to the occurrence of the events, while hazards are the negative effects presented by the natural disasters.
Hurricanes, for example, are commonly occurring natural disasters. Some of the main hazards of hurricanes include death and displacement among others. Natural hazards are commonly associated with the occurrence of natural disasters. The negative effects of natural disasters commonly determine the presence of hazards to individuals residing within a region. Management of the events leading to the occurrence of a natural hazard usually involves long monitoring of the patterns of the occurrence of natural disasters.
Many regions across the Asian continent are prone to typhoons, which are another form of natural disasters. People living within these regions are always warned of impeding hazards through the habitation of high risk zones (Chen et al., p 1709). The establishment of these regions as being prone to such disasters follows continuous monitoring of the occurrence of these events. While hazards cannot be avoided since they are natural events, preparedness ensures that there is minimal destruction.
The occurrence of natural hazards can be predicted through proper utilization of meteorological knowledge, which predicts the occurrence of natural disasters. The resulting effects of these disasters are not hidden from the world. Hence, hazards can be predicted whenever and wherever natural disasters are observed.Different events present different magnitudes of destruction and hazards as well. Many natural hazards usually have similar effects on people, that is, the death of the affected individuals.
Natural hazards related to extreme weather usually have destructive results on the population living within the affected regions. Displacement of populations remains a common effect of the hazards related to extreme weather conditions occurring within different regions. Despite the gravity of the effects of natural hazards, many of these effects are short-lived since the resulting events last for a limited duration of time. Epidemic diseases, as opposed to extreme weather, present long-term challenges and they remain difficult to be predicted.
While testing can be performed to ascertain these hazards, their effects can be long-term leading to the adoption of preventive measures.Natural disasters cannot be avoided but steps can be taken to avoid the hazards resulting from these events. Warnings, for instance, issued by the concerned stakeholders like governments are very effective in the prevention of hazards. Many individuals among the population, however, fail to heed the warnings issued until the actual occurrence of the event. This definitely worsens the outcomes.
International campaigns initiated by humanitarian organizations, such as, the United Nations and Red Cross are playing a key role in the prevention of natural hazards. Moreover, risk assessment is also one of the main components that ensure sustainable development. It is for this reason that within many regions around the globe, development projects involve an extensive disaster risk assessment that seeks to ascertain the presence of preventive measure to avert the adverse effects of the hazard.
