Action potential refers to the short-lasting event or an impulse that occurs in the neurons when the electrical membrane potential (charge) of the cell rapidly rises then falls. It takes place in the excitable cell-like neurons and muscle cells. This is because T tubules do not have the voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels, which are found on the plasma membrane. Therefore they carry action potential through their interior muscles cells through voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels. Voltage-gated ion channels, on the cell’s plasma membrane, generate action potentials. The channels become shut at the point when the membrane potential is near the resting membrane potential of the cell. There is a change across the cell membrane in polarity as the action potential travels through the axon. The K+ and Na+ gated ions channels open and then close as the membrane reaches the threshold potential as it responds to signal from another neuron. The Na+ channel opens allowing the sodium ions to move to the axon, which causes depolarization. This is reversed at the cause of depolarization when the K+ channel opens and the K+ ions move into the axon.
