Such cells are also expected to provide a cure for diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s (Erwin, 2004, p. 211). In the usual course, diabetes cannot be cured by any medicine. Therefore, stem cell research has proved to be advantageous to diabetic patients, as well. Disorders of the blood and heart can be improved by the introduction of stem cells. A damaged heart can be rectified by injecting stem cells into its muscles. It is now feasible to isolate muscle cells without much difficulty. Thereafter, these cells can be grown in cultures and injected into the cardiac muscles. Moreover, Leukemia, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease respond positively to treatment with blood stem cells. These cells are extracted from the umbilical cord at birth or from the blood marrow of the afflicted individual. These cells can also be procured from the umbilical cord of a sibling (Ritz, 2012, p. 6). As such, embryonic stem cell research is not immoral because it saves the life of many people from deadly diseases like heart complaints, leukemia, thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Furthermore, the loss of glial cells and neurons has been demonstrated to result in a number of common neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke and multiple sclerosis. Patients with these disorders can be helped immensely, as glial cells and neurons can be generated from stem cells in culture. Several projects are now underway to develop transplantation therapies based on stem cells. In addition, stem cells...
Thus, patients with Alzheimer’s disease have benefitted due to basal forebrain grafts of the fibroblasts that cause nerve growth factor. This opposes cholinergic neuronal death, stimulates cell function, and enhances memory (Lindvall & Kokaia, 2006, p. 1095). This is a miraculous innovation in the medical field. Thus, Alzheimer’s disease which has defied treatment stands to be cured by stem... ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

.... These approaches may provide effective therapeutic opportunities for repairing damaged bones due to injury or disease. The source of cells for cell-based approaches includes xenogenic, allogenic, and autologous cells. Scientists have discovered the use of Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC), which have proved to be effective in the repair of damaged bones. The source of the ESCs includes the blastocysts’ inner cell mass, which undergo fast cell division to replace the lost bone tissues. ESCs differentiate into osteogenic cells in selective culture environment. This property makes the ESCs to be...

Mammalian Stem Cells

...Mammalian Stem Cells Mammalian stem cells have offered a tremendous biomedical potential throughout the years. This is because of their ability of self renewal and differentiation into adult cell type. Stem cell biology has thus been made an intense area of study in biology and other clinical potentials. The main goal of research in these two fields is to get a deeper understanding of the cell linage. Research on stem cells has opened up a new field of cell based therapies which are capable of treating a variety of diseases through the...

...of transplantation. In practical use, cell based therapies have only so far been applied on a limited scale in hematological malignancies, to reconstitute the cell population after intensive chemotherapy meant to eradicate the patients own bone marrow. Their success and popularity as a mode of treatment in these illnesses is widely established. Stem cell research can also yield excessive information about the processes of cell division and differentiation that are involved in the development of the different organ systems of the embryo from the unicellular zygote. These mechanisms are of intense interest to scientists because they play key roles in...

Biology and Stem Cells

... In the field of biology, the research in the new era has paved the way to the discovery and development of cures for different forms of diseases and ailments. One of the most important tools in the said field is related to stem cells. Stem cells can be considered as one of the most important biological entity of the present generation due to the potentialities that can present in the field of medicine. Stem cells can be defined as the cells that are undeveloped or not yet specialized. Due to the said character, it can still undergo proliferation, self renewal and differentiation to...

Stem cells and society

...Stem cells and society Every man has the capacity of free thought and that fueled his thoughts to innovate what ever he wishes. Medical science in its totality is meant to defend and promote integral good of human beings in keeping with human dignity. Advanced technologies give man the chance to create a world with lesser problems and better stability. Cloning is one of the greatest scientific leaps that man has ever dreamed of. This essay substantiates the significance of cloning in this problematic world of diseases and health issues. Though there are a number of arguments against the usability and ethics of cloning, the enormous contribution this clinical intervention can have on...

...Introduction Human mankind always is in the search of enhancing his standards of living based on scientific principles. The changing global environment, increased life expectancy, and ever increasing population are offering unmet challenges. Stem cell therapy is one of the sophisticated techniques and promising technologies to achieve healthy future. These cell based therapies are recognized as regenerative or reparative medicine to treat various illness and diseases. A fundamental unit of life of all living creatures is a cell and different types of cells make up our body (e.g., blood cells, skin cells, cervical cells). Stem cells are responsible for tissue or organ formation during prenatal life, and also for further growth... ...

...cells.” (What are Stem Cells?) Stem cells are more than capable of curing several serious brain diseases. Parkinsons and Alzheimers can easily be cured by using stem cells. The damages cells in the brain are superseded with stem cells and this is how the patient is cured. Earlier there was no cure for these diseases but thanks to stem cells, these diseases have become perfectly curable now. Conclusion The research...

...the stem cells to be transplanted for the cure of conditions. Another of the key advantage of the stem cell is the limited auto rejection if implanted on the same individual it is harvested from. It thus makes the implantation of stem cell from individuals easy contributing to the achievement of the desired treatment outcome (Hynes et al., 2012). Nevertheless, the stem cell has a disadvantage since they may require immune suppression during the harvesting and the transplant process. The harvesting of stem cells requires radiation for removal of the...

...from which is unethical. However, with the advancement of technology, researchers currently use ethical methods like the Induced Pluripotent Stem cells (iPS). The cells are artificially derived from non-pluripotent cell like the somatic cells (Explorable.com, 2008). The use of pluripotent stem cells had shunned the controversial issue and boosted the milestones since scientists no longer use embryos. There are many advantages associated with the use of the stem cells. The cells have helped to treat a variety of medical problems and have boosted humanity through the...
