Lifestyle and Thoughts of Famous American Composers - Research Paper Example

Task: William Faulkner, Langston Hughes and Edgar Allen Poe works. Introduction are always influenced by their backgrounds in coming up with literary composition. As such, authors use imagery and symbolism based on their interactions with their environment. William Faulkner, Langston Hughes and Edgar Allen Poe who are famous American composers exuded similarities in coming up with their composition. The three authors had a challenging background, which influenced their perception of the American society (Miller 2).

Indeed, they were annoyed with the events that were taking place in the American society. Surprisingly, the authors came from unstable families; hence, they resorted to expressing their thoughts of life to the masses through literary compositions. The works of Faulkner, Hughes and Poe represents a typical middle class American family in the early 19th century struggling to handle financial challenges. The compositions reflect a time when the society was reeling from the effects of wars (Miller 3).

Despite the difference in the backgrounds of the three composers, they were investigative in their compositions. Henceforth, people refer to them as gothic composers. Indeed, they pondered at miseries in the societies as presented in their compositions. The authors utilized imagery and symbolism in their creations. This piece analyses the works of Faulkner, Hughes and Poe in relation to their lifestyles. William Faulkner William Faulkner grew up from a humble background in Mississippi where he joined the military and later rose to the rank of a sergeant.

The military provided Faulkner an exposure like no other. While working in the forces, he interacted with people from various backgrounds (Aiken 7). At first, it was hard for William to acknowledge the challenges that people were facing in the society. The author got the idea of writing creative compositions from his environment. This was his mission to salvage the society from the problems people were facing. His first work was a novel he wrote in 1925 (Aiken 2). The compositions that followed were influenced by the stories he heard from his elders about the Americas history.

He used imagery in his works. He devoted to inform the audience the decadence that was going on in the southern states. Langston Hughes Hughes focused on enlightening the American society from undertaking several odd jobs. At the time, he had intended to reflect on the challenges that affected blacks in America. According to Miller (8), literature gave Hughes an opportunity of reflect on the challenges that affected blacks in America. The previous scholars who had written works on racial issues influenced most of his compositions.

Hughes’ works are a clear indication that he traversed several territories in America in his pursuits. It is interesting Hughes’ portrays racism as a problem that affected mostly the blacks in the US. He grew at a time when the American society was faced with several humanitarian challenges (Miller 1). Families in the south were reeling from the effects of the civil war. Children among the middle-income families were left alone since their parents away for most of the times. Indeed numerous families were unstable as portrayed in the works of Hughes titled “simple stakes a claim”.

Edgar Poe Edger Allan Poe spent his life in Boston where he utilized gothilic elements in his works. Some of his creations were similar to the works of Faulkner and Hughes. Both the authors experienced the effects of the First World War. From the creations of Poe, it is evident that he utilized imagery in expressing his ideas (Bloom 12). His choice of location in the literary works presented his imaginary thoughts. Most of the characters in his works were conceptualized because they were imaginary.

According to Bloom (13), Poe reflected his past through his compositions. As such, he uses flashback in dialogues. Some of his beautiful compositions were influenced by the stories he was told by his grandmother when he was young. Poe had financial constraints in his life. He lived an improvised lifestyle despite coming up with creative compositions. His life was surrounded by miseries leading to his melancholic nature (Bloom 11). This challenges he faced in life made him question human nature.

Conclusion Writers have an interesting lifestyle and Faulkner, Hughes and Poe are not an exception. The composers always put their ideas to the public. Generally the compositions are always a way the writers expressing their inner thoughts. Faulkner, Hughes and Poe became gothilic writers because of their backgrounds.
