Geoffrey Scott states that it is “coherence in architecture, distinct though it is from beauty, has a function of its own. Humanized mass, space, and line are the basis of beauty, but coherence is the basis of style”. In Scott’s writings, it has been clearly stated that the various aspects of mass, space, and line give the substance of character in terms of aesthetic pleasures – this provides splendor secluded and disconnected. One could, however, find the objectives of architecture in terms of a lot more than just the fulfillment of isolated pleasures.

Architecture is beauty not just to be found in synthesis. It controls and disciplines the beauty of a painting, sculpture, and the minor arts; it austerely orders even the beauty which is its own. It seeks, through style, to give it clarity and scope, and that coherence which the beauty of Nature lacks." He states, that one transcribes oneself into the present form. This metaphor of transcribing or inhabiting resolves the old aesthetic puzzle about how feeling can be in form by assimilating it to the more fundamental puzzle of embodiment.

Scott goes on to state that functional fitness in architecture is not a matter of immediate perception but is an intellectual inference and therefore the adequate functioning of a structure cannot affect its aesthetic quality. Architecture and ChildrenArchitecture surrounds adults and children every day, but little time, if any, is spent defining it critically considering how the built environment affects people and how they, in turn, can affect the environment. The architectural environment is itself a work of art, both shaped by culture and shaping culture in turn.

As such it influences human behavior causing stimulation and suppression, generating a sense of joy and fear, and encouraging or discouraging the creative process, as such it influences learning as both a critical tool and a critical environment. Participatory architecture for children is powerful. It is democratic. So much so that it creates opportunities for children to become literate co-builders of the educative design process. In this context, it becomes important that one understands the special nature of the needs where a child is concerned.

Children understand their environment in a different way as compared to adults.
