Interrelationships: Similar, family, and home is one of the main themes in the story Zeitoun. During a disaster, Zeitoun prefers to stay behind since he feels tied to the city. He takes the responsibility as the head to the family to protect their properties. Zeitoun feels a certain responsibility for the residences in New Orleans, which he believes is his home. This feeling influences his decision to paddle around the town to help those affected after the hurricane. Even after being imprisoned, Zeitoun and his family remain in New Orleans because it’s their home.

Conclusion: Having a sense of belonging attracts people to a city; despite facing injustices, people tend to be attracted to specific places due to the investment and connection they have built over the years. This explains why people would prefer staying in their home countries despite the challenges they face.

Zeitoun observes massive looting as people take advantage of the disaster similarity. The national guards are corrupt since some of his friends who had money when they were arrested were not given back since there was no evidence, which means someone above them stole their money. Corruption is evident when FEMA did not bother to assist Zeitoun to seek justice because of his religious background.

Conclusion: Despite many reforms, corruption is a culture that is deeply rooted in the country. Ironically, it is the law enforcers who practice the vice. Police officers are the most corrupt force since they take advantage of others using their powers to oppress and kill the weak.

Hence, Eggers concludes that the authorities are responsible for creating injustice.

This is a position the author argues that this is a deliberate effort of discrimination that has long been practiced in America.
