The African-Americans were employed by the whites as their maids (Stockett, 2011). As maids, they had responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children while the employers went to work in big offices or shopping. The lifestyles of those two groups were completely different.  The employers were rich; they lived in big houses, went shopping, and afforded to take their children to good schools while the maids, on the other hand, lived in poor conditions. Despite their hard work, tender love, and care that they showed their employers and their children, the maids still faced a lot of racism from their employers.

They were intimidated, insulted, and treated as lesser beings.American society has changed over the years in the way it treats African-Americans. Racism has reduced and equal chances in employment are offered equally and like in the past. The movie depicts what was happening back in the early 1960s in America. The African-Americans faced discrimination in employment, education, and even housing. They were treated as a minority group and were neglected. The director of the movie compiles the story of the movie through the lives of two ladies Aibileen and Minny who are employed as maids in a white family’s household.

They are the main characters in the movie (Stockett, 2011). Taylor uses themes like racism, discrimination, marginalization, and dehumanization to enhance those two characters. In today’s world dynamic policies that enforce strong equality rights to all people exist and this, therefore, differs substantially from the 1960’s America. People from different races are given the same opportunities at jobs, housing, and education. African-Americans have the same opportunities as their white counterparts.

They are allowed to vote and enjoy rights of freedom, expression among others that they never used to enjoy.Although racism still exists in some parts of America, the introduction of laws that discourage racism has helped in minimizing these cases.
