The guard poor positioning in the photo and, therefore, quick gaze at him may be impossible due to difficulty in his location. The figures at the other visitors in the gallery who appear to be looking at the viewer or in the painting may not be a point of gaze since his angle or position is highly inappropriate. He has seated facing inappropriate and therefore locating him in the crowd would be relatively difficult as compared to locating the two figure facing each other. In conclusion I think the figures that appear to be looking at each other are the main source of the first gaze in the artwork due to an excellent viewing position, well contrasting clothes and considerate angle in the paintwork.
