Four Days in September Introduction The film’s subject draws its audience to establish the challenges that the Brazilian political dissidents experienced in their bid to reestablish the country’s democracy that had ceased following a military coup. The director, Bruno Barreto identifies Paulo as the film’s major character. The argument that the film seeks to portray through Paulo’s actions in emphasizing that the Revolutionary Movement 8th October (MR-8) should resolve in kidnapping the American ambassador to Brazil is a sign that the revolutionary front was relentless in their fight for democracy. According to the film, Brazil was once a democratic nation following its independence in the mid-20th century; however, the political freedom vanished after the people’s government was overthrown by the military in 1969 (Ebert 1). Therefore, the following study develops a platform of identifying the film’s relevance to the country’s social, political, economic, and legal factors for the rural and urban citizens among others. The film’s identification of the country’s political history and racial attitudes According to the film’s characters and their behaviors, it is critical to understand that the majority population of the citizens recognized democracy as the best political ideology that should have existed in the nation. However, the citizens were unaware of the apparent alternatives that they should have embraced in order to achieve and restore democracy in the militarized society. The film describes that the country’s elite of aggressive youths detested the existence of the military regime in the country, and resolved to the execution of guerrilla and terrorist tactics in order to overthrow the regime with the notion that the process would lead to the restoration of democracy in the nation. The film identifies the revolutionary front as comprising two groups led by youthful and radical leaders (Ebert 1). The fact that the film depicts Andreia as the leader of the revolutionary front is a sign that the Brazilian political structure embraced gender sensitivity in leadership. The aspect presents the possibility that the country’s emphasis in the restoration of democracy was a realistic ideology. Despite the film’s development of the understanding that the majority population was keen towards the reestablishment of democracy in the nation, it is evident that the multicultural society lacked unity. The evidence emanates from the script whereby a Brazilian woman learned about the revolutionists’ intentions prior to the execution of their mission to kidnap the American ambassador and raised alarm to the police hoping that they would take action and halt the plan. The subject drawn from the observation is that some of the Brazilians were uncertain of the success that could emanate from the revolution’s military practices (Ebert 1). Further, it is salient to understand that the police neglected the woman’s plea because the targeted victim in the kidnapping exercise was an American and not Hispanic as the majority population. The film’s description about the contrasting rural and urban culture The film critically describes that the majority of the Brazilians living in the urban areas educated and informed about the global changes and the goals that many nations were seeking to achieve following an end to the World War II. Therefore, the characters who participated in the revolution movements were young and educated such that they were capable of working against the existence of the militarized government. Presumably, the film’s development process targeted to identify that these revolutionists from the urban centers were aggressive over any forms of oppression and would engage in guerrilla and other unlawful operations in order to assume the nation’s political power for the benefit of the entire population. It is notable that the country’s rural citizens were not affected by the military regime; hence, they did not show their concern in the revolutions’ democratization processes (Ebert 1). In emphasis, the rural population did not perceive the difference between the military government and the former democratic administration despite the nation’s state of independence. The film denotes that the urban dwellers acquired information through the media facility of the nation contrary to the nation’s rural population, which lagged behind in receiving communication. The importance of the practices identified in the film in depicting the historical Brazilian culture is relevant to the extent that the film’s director and the chosen characters plot and execute their actions using the information collected from oral and verbal intelligence. The development of the scripts stimulates the imagination that the youths of the country who lived in the urban centers were educated during the military coup; hence, they understood the negative changes that the political system would attract to the nation (Ebert 1). It is through the evaluation of the previous democratic practices that one can establish the population’s cultural emphasis to reestablish democracy and restore its freedom. The film’s identification of the country’s poverty and inequality The film’s development illuminates the citizens’ hope for a democratic nation that would address the existing economic and social challenges in order to increase the chances of making Brazil a renowned economy. The revolutionists comprised of a group of youths who lacked employment opportunities despite their education. Further, the film describes that the multi-cultural nation of Brazil comprised a large destitute population from every constituent race despite the presence of resources. The notion drawn from such characteristics is that the poor people of the nation perceived that a political structure that embraced democratic ideologies would lead to the establishment of profound remedies to eradicate or rather reduce the poverty levels. According to Paolo’s actions to join the revolution, it is evident that the journalist who had graduated resolved to participate in the movement with the knowledge that the subsequent success and establishment of a democratic government structure would influence the nation’s economic environment. According to the revolutionists’ views, it is easy to acknowledge that the political structure comprised a group of dictators that benefited from the country’s resources amidst increasing poverty levels for the inferior groups (Ebert 1). The notion denoted from the film’s use of male characters in the country’s administration structure is vital in emphasizing that the period witnessed the absence of equality and empowerment of the female gender. Further, it is important to acknowledge that Andreia resolved to unify the youth against the government after learning about its antisocial practices of leadership in a civilized society. The subject of changing gender roles and attitudes towards sexuality The director’s inclusion of the female heroine as the leader of the strong revolution front in the country stimulates viewers to understand that the nation’s cultural perceptions about gender roles had changed profusely during the period of the overthrown democratic government. The critical approach to identification of the changes witnessed in the country towards gender diversity in roles implements that Paolo among other characters were devoted to support and execute the union’s plots without perceiving any form of inferiority from the fact that they were under the leadership of Andreia (Ebert 1). Further, the film enables viewers to understand that the Brazilian society was comfortable with the choices that men and women could make in choosing their partners, and this is shown through the love affair between Paolo and Andreia, the female leader who was also in a relationship with another revolutionist. Conclusion The film identifies the political history of Brazil and the menace that can result from the exercise of dictatorship. It is evident that the citizens suffered torture whenever they tried to resent the regime’s practices. Viewers can discretely observe that the country’s youths engaged in antisocial and criminal practices in the revolution with the emphasis that the nation needed the restoration of democracy in order to grow its social, economic, and political environments. Therefore, the history of the nation is observable through the film’s inclusion of different positive and negative practices towards the achievement of freedom.
