Film Analysis: Destiny In this film, Chinedu has depicted destiny as the main theme of this film. The film contains two main characters Bojiun Chen and her counterpart Yuwei Tan. It has two scenes with Yuwei being introduced in the second scene of the film. In this film, Chinedu has used the style of voice-over narration to assist the audience follow and understand the meaning of the film, and to define the primary theme of destiny to the audience. Chinedu has used styles such as symbolism, irony, Dialogue, editing, to arrange the message and themes such as conflict, patience amongst others as it will be discussed in this summary. The plot of this of this film is set in a public place most likely mall, with less regard to public interference as people are seen passing by, and others going on with their activities without necessarily being connected to this film. The narrator does not allow the audience to realize if the immediate surrounding environment is part of the scene of the film. There is a chair placed at the first scene with one of the characters being introduced as Bojiun Chen sitting on it, with the narrator adding that he had come to look for destiny. The character is sitting rather impatiently on the chair and later he stands up and strolls around the premises. Behind this chair, there is a painting of horses running. The first scene of the film ends with a visual caption, depicting a time-frame of one Hour has elapsed. The second scene begins with the narrator introducing a second character namely Yuwei Tan, who is busy scrolling her phone. The narrator informs the audience that this character is also looking for destiny just as the first character and she is shown sitting on the chair the first character Bojiun Chen was sitting on previously. Peace Chinedu introduces dialogue between these two characters, where the viewer is shown the characters arguing, aspect of surprise, impatient and generally a mood of conflict among them. The second scene ends with the Camera focusing on a paper pasted behind the chair, written on, ‘Destiny’. Destiny, as the main theme of this film, has been achieved through the use of symbolism, irony, through the characters, emotions and also through the use of via shots. Symbolically the chair has been the primary factor through which destiny had been emboldened in. Bojium Chen patiently sits on the chair to wait for destiny for a considerable long time, ironically failing to discover that the chair was the source of destiny he was looking for, symbolically he had already found destiny only that he had not discovered it yet. In connection to this, it can further be argued that, Yuwei sitting on the chair symbolically fulfilled the destiny Chen had come to look for. Emotionally Bojiun Chen gets attached to that chair, to the extent that when he finds Yuwei Tan sitting on it he gets apprehensive that his primary reason to look for destiny is under threat. In the last scene, Chen emotionally laments on the delay, destiny has taken without arriving. Peace Chinedu has applied the use of view shots in the last scenes, where the camera has been focused to the back of the chair, with a paper stuck on it, the paper has wording “ Destiny” written on it, this further emphasizes the use of destiny as the primary theme in this short film. Conflict has also been used to describe the importance of the chair in relation to the main theme, destiny. Peace Chinedu shows the viewer several conflicting circumstances such as the argument between Yuwei and Chen, conflict of interest between the environment ‘destiny’ is to be found and the doubts of Bojiun Chen, also conflict arising from the delay of destiny. When Bojiun Chean comes back from the stroll and finds Yuwei Tan sitting on his chair, he starts an argument, reiterating his right to sit on that particular chair, but Yuwei Tan adamantly ignores his demands and refuses to let go the chair hence fueling conflict. In his last scene, Bojiun Chan is shown complaining of the long time destiny has taken to arrive. In the first, scene the narrator tells as of Bojium having sat waiting for a long time decides to stand and stroll around the environment and the narrator hints to the audience, the doubts Bojiun had about the environment the destiny was supposed to be found. One element used in this film by Chinedu is the Voice-over narration. Chinedu has used this to enhance to introduce both Bojiun Chen an Yuwei Tan characters, in the scene. The voice over has been carefully used also to kill the monotony make the scene a bit lively away from the boring Bojiun Chen’s character. The voice over helps the viewer to learn the kind of the environment the film is set when Chinedu tries to describe the place when Bojiun Chen decides to walk around after waiting for a long time… “ Bojiun Chen decides to stroll around the expansive, beautiful palace, and he gets stunned and wonders if it’s the right place to be” (Destiny). Through the voice over, the audience learns the doubts Bojiun Tan develops after waiting for a considerably a long time without destiny arriving as he had hoped for. Destiny is ironically pronounced using this element when Chinedu introduces the second character Yuwei Tan who also is looking for destiny. In spite of the film showing as a paper written on destiny stuck behind the chair, Yuwei Tan and Bojiun Chen both find what they are looking for. Each one of them is determined to find his destiny and the film ends with an empty chair with no Bojiun Chen and Yuwei Tan. Chinedu leaves the audience in anticipation, rhetorically we ask ourselves, what happened, and did they leave together? Did Bojiun Chen find the person,” Destiny” he had come to look for? We ponder. The element of dialogue has been used in this film to further emphasize the original theme, Destiny. It has also been used to show emotions and the character traits of Bojiun Chen and Yuwei Tan. Chinedu in the last scene creates a conversation between Bojiun Chen and Yuwei Tan where they both discover they are looking for the same thing: Destiny. This is shown when Yuwei gets surprised after overhearing Bojiun Chen lament on the longevity destiny has taken without arriving and asks him, “so you are also looking for destiny?” (Destiny). Bojiun Chen too gets surprised. In this last scene, Chinedu shows as character traits of both Yuwei and Bojiun. Arrogance and rudeness depict in Yuwei Tan during their argument with Bojiun Chen, she adamantly refuses to hand over the chair to Bojiun who had sat there before her, she argues arrogantly…….. ”who said this is your chair?” (Destiny). In addition, without a courtesy ignores to hand over the chair and continues to look at her phone. Chen, on the other hand, through dialogue, depicts a submissive, impatient and a little bit ill groomed young man. Chen could easily get another chair and sat on it instead of arguing with Yuwei, or rather just be a gentleman and let the girl know he was the first on that chair, but through his acknowledgement let her sit on it. Once again, the symbolic importance of that chair lets the two characters get overwhelmed by emotions. In conclusion, Chinedu has applied the use of editing to narrow the activities performed by the characters on the main theme: Destiny. This has been perfectly enhanced by her use of narration. When Bojiun Chan goes for a stroll, the audience fails understand what he did, while strolling, what he saw while walking around, he only comes back at the second scene while running. When Bojiun Chan and Yuwei Tan begin an argument, part of the scene shows probability of it being edited and hid from the audience. The audience only manages to see the surprised part, depicted on both of the characters after realizing that they all had been looking for the same thing. Editing has been used to reduce the emphasis on other small themes such conflicts’, impatience amongst others. Additionally, the theme of patient and impatient has both been used side by side to evoke the interest to get the primary objective of the two characters, destiny. The narrator tells the audience that Bojiun Chen had sat for a long time waiting for the destiny to arrive. He even resorted to stroll around the premises as he waited. Yuwei Tan, on the other hand, waited patiently for destiny. The aspect of impatience appeared when Boijun got angry after finding Yuwei Tan sitting on the chair he had occupied earlier before.
