The arts and cultures under the influence of medievalism are the most progressive ones in the history of mankind such as America and England. The medievalism impacted the field of arts a great deal and freed the artists to incorporate the concept of love and romance. The modern way of life tends to consider each and every human being as equal to the others and therefore, it does not give anybody authority and government on the basis of bloodlines. The approach is still in the middle phases of development because economic power is the source of political power in the modern era of the 21st century. The individualistic cultures are the ones who got the real meaning of the philosophy. Additionally, the governmental systems are guided in order to serve the citizens’ needs above all else. The notion of greater good should always be served by sacrificing the needs of the few in order to fulfill those of the majority. Human society has been under continuous evolution. From the time of ancient slavery to the modern time of child labor, the deprived class has always been the sufferer. However, with the passage of time, the common individuals have developed their own ‘commons’ that are meant to serve the purpose of safeguarding the rights of the common individuals of the society. Societies that have evolved to focus on the needs of individuals are the ones that are leading the others in the process. Although, this is beneficial to the common individuals of the society, the notion due to its very nature alters the power distribution between the powerful few and the weaker many of the society. This is a dramatic change in the currently prevailing social system of the world. The reason for this is the fact that the development of commons sets free the needy class of the society from the undue influence of the powerful class of the society. This challenge for the ruling class is often times not acceptable by this class. To overcome such attempts that are directed towards attaining freedom from the influence of leading class, the powerful class makes use of laws and law-enforcement agencies which are essentially the tools for manipulating the lower classes of the society. The arts before the incorporation of medievalist values allowed the filmmakers to promote humanistic concerns in the field of showbiz. The arts prior to modernism were used to promote supremacy of rulers on other races. The artworks were not permitted to flourish in the era before modernism. The modernist approach gave the humanity the message of love. The dedication towards modern philosophy is taken and treated as a guarantee to achieve economic growth because the nations will transform into efficient social machines whereas, the level of conflict will decline and then, they will work in a collective setting in order to achieve growth in all fields such as arts, science and economics. Since the rights of the common individuals have become the central theme of any society; the development of “commons” that are owned by the common people of the society are becoming a norm. Slide 6 The Roman empire was a symbol of hatred and racist thinking in the society but its downfall marked the beginning of new era in the human history. The modern civil rights moments ran by Mandela and Martin Luther King were partly inspired by the philosophy of medievalism. The modern moments supporting the civil rights in American society were partly supported by the works of philosophers of 1330. The year of 1330 stared at the future with a different perspective. The roots of hatred were cut in order to promote love. The religious harmony supported love and respect among people. The character of Jesus gave the message of love to the world which was well received by Martin Luther King who raised voice for the basic rights of his people. The nations are always starting with gathering data and information about their external environment and its ability to help them in meeting their basic needs of food and shelter. The data and information gathering in this timeframe always remain with the nation even at the later stages of its life. Marshall Sahlins is an American anthropologist who is also a professor at University of Chicago and he wrote “Affluent Societies” in the year of 2006. The chapter revealed his surprising beliefs about the force of development. The arguments stated that development is complete when a community is able to fulfill the basic needs of each individual. He argued that development occurs through the mechanism of action and reaction because the growth of individual results in devolution of another and therefore, the societies are made up of hunters and preys. The modern day anthropologists collectively argue that Marshall’s concept of humanity is crude because it does not value the traditional virtue theory that states that human beings are fully capable of practicing compassion and the ability to practice ethics increase with economic growth and intellectual development. Thus, the presence of hunter-gatherer society is highly unlikely in the 21st century. The commons ensure to challenge the presence of economic vultures in the specific community. Slide 7 The term commons is used to refer to property that is owned by the community as opposed to being owned by the state or by the private sector. The term is being invoked in neo-medievalistic interpretations of the relationship between individuals, society and resources of the community. The basic unit for producing wealth is called organization and the organization is defined as a social entity that achieves its goals and objectives as a result of collective efforts of its participants so wealth production is directly proportionate to organizational social relations The humans in the light of agency theory will always look to safeguard their interests and if their goals cannot be fulfilled without the help of others then, they will resort to formation of social relations with others that are based on the rule of reciprocity. Additionally, the maximization of utility cannot be accomplished without others’ assistance so humans are known to fulfill their interests via social relations. Therefore, communal effort is strongly required to achieve development of nations. The commons work in order to strengthen social relations so that development can be achieved. The commons are also used to help the less fortunate population in terms of strengthening their position in the society. Slide 8 The slaves were supposed to serve their masters against all costs and they did not have the right to hold properties to their names. The idea of social services and public property came along with the force of modernism that recognized the rights of everyone Slide 9 The resources of the world are limited and therefore, they should be used in order to serve the humanity at large. The needs of the few should be sacrificed in order to serve the need to do a greater good. The governments must work in order to serve the public interests as effectively as possible Slide 10 Rational and modern thinking can persuade people to consider the effects of their actions on the interests of society and thus act responsibly in taking decision about having more children. The recognition of the limitations of modern states’ legitimate power and the limitations of technical or scientific solutions highlights the growing influence of neo-medievalistic ideas. Slide 11 The power can be exercised by the state because it does have effective power to do so because of the strengths of privately supported administrative law. There will be a possibility of resistance as the concept of commons is rooted in the idea of giving the people the power to have property. The effect of growing population density on the quality of the commons should also be considered because there may be not enough property that can be owned by everybody. The power in the view of modernist approach should be legitimized with the help of electoral process and the government should work in order to assist the people in achieving their needs and wants through mechanisms such as common goods and public properties. Slide 12 The benefits of common-pool resources should be equally distributed amongst the people without discrimination. The unequal division of commons may cause social and economic disparity to escalate in the society Slide 13 Common property is regarded as a facility that is controlled by a few members who have the power to manage it and the can also exclude others from enjoying the benefits of that facility. Open access regimes do not have the power to exclude anyone from enjoying the benefits of a particular resource. Communitarian property can prevent the destruction of commons caused by open access regimes Slide 14 The concept of the commons may entail negative freedoms as there is an absence of laws that can exclude people from enjoying the resources.
