Analysis of Maria Full of Grace - Movie Review Example

What are the choices they make? The movie Maria Full of Grace is a remarkable movie that tells of the lives of three drug mules. The main character is Maria. In the movie Frida, Frida remains as the main character. In the movie Like Water for Chocolate, Tita is the main character. These three movies talk about the lives of women that underwent huddles in their lives to reach where they went. Maria, Frida and Tita are women that become faced with challenges in life and had to make hard decisions. In Maria Full of Grace, the character Maria is the main character becomes faced with difficult situations in life. Maria Together with other two girls, engage in transporting large quantities of cocaine, from Colombia to New York. At a tender age of 17 years, the young Colombian girl becomes forced to go into selling drugs after she remained the only daughter her family depended on. Despite her harsh economic status even after quiting job from her previous employer. In addition to her problems, she still got pregnant and refused to marry the guy. With increased financial pressure coming from both sides, Maria decided to make a terrible decision. Maria decides to join the Cocaine business as a transporter while in her pregnancy state just to raise money for the up keep of the unborn and her family. In comparison to Tito in the movie Like Water for Chocolate, she also became faced with challenges that made her take appropriate choices. In the beginning of the movie, one could realize the undying love Tita and Piedro had for each other, though her mother, Mama Elena did not consent their union. Piedro ends up marrying his eldest sister, Rosaura. Tita continued her pursuit for her lover by ensuring she cared her nephew after birth more than her sister. Her mother on realizing how Piedro and Tita came closer each day due to the Rosaura’s child, she arranges for Piedro and Rosaura to move to a distant place. This stressed Tita as she was deeply in love with Piedro and his son. The main character in the film Frida, also proved to be a strong willed woman. Even after getting polio, getting involved in an accident, she still manages to pull herself together and learn how to walk. It is her determination to walk after such an accident that shocks many. Furthermore, after recovery from the hospital, Frida manages to walk, but in pain. Are they fit choices or not? From the three movies, a lot could be derived from the hardships they underwent to become what they did. These women hard to make tough choices some of which were inimical while others good. Tina after struggling with Mother Elena in life and even after life with her ghost, eventually becomes freed from the snare of tradition to marry her true love Piedro despite the many challenges that stood on her way. Tita knew that her eldest sister became forced to marry Piedro in an attempt to obey traditions and hence still persisted knowing Piedro will do in response. The story hence is a love story of two lovers that became bound to be together for life and afterlife. The main obstacle to Tita was her mother, Elena whom hated her. For instance, even after getting hurt after raiders injured her, she still refused food brought to her by Tita, eventually dying due to ingesting overdose of emetics. Tita’s choice of loving Piedro for life proved a terrific idea. For instance, after Piedro and his wife moved to San Antonio with their child, it died since it was deriving its love from Tita. In as much as she was the youngest in the family, she treated her mother well, though her mother treated her badly. In the movie, when she becomes tormented by the ghost of Elena, she made a decision to condemn it. This ended up badly as Piedro became consumed with the dying flame from the ghost. Another decision Tita made was telling her husband John of her undying love for Piedro. John accepts, but just tells her to decide. Tita eventually agrees to get married to Piedro which they end up enjoying their passion to death. Maria engages in the illegal transport of drugs using one of the most extremes means in order to avoid the illicit product from becoming detected by the authority. Maria becomes a drug dealing due to financial problems. In being the only bread winner for the family from which she came from, she becomes forced to work at a tender age of 17 to earn income. After working with a boss that mistreated her, Maria eventually quit her job. That according to me was a lousy decision since it led to worse consequences. After getting sacked and still faced by the challenge of being pregnant and needing more cash to sustain herself and her family, she becomes introduced into the cocaine industry. In knowing that cocaine is dangerous, Maria still decides to become one of the transporters from Columbia to New York together with other 3 women. Frida on the other hand becomes faced with crucial decisions to make in her life some of which turn out to be good. While in hospital, Frida decides to take painting as a hobby and eventually ends taking as a career after she sought guidance from Diego Rivera. Why did they make these choices? These three main characters from the stories made choices. For example, Maria in Maria Full of Grace made a decision to look for an employment when she was 17 years to cater for her family needs. In addition, she quit her job after a series of mistreatment from her employer. Eventually, she decides to become a drug transporter in order to raise money for her unborn child and for her family. In Like water for chocolate, Tita constantly makes decisions that constantly bring her closer to Piedro. For instance, the night before her marriage, she lets Piedro break her virginity instead of John. In addition, after John returned from the long trip, she made a decision to inform John of her love for Piedro. Tita had been a witness of how tradition interfered with love and never stopped at anything until Piedro was his. She even waits till after her eldest sister dies to take over the role of a wife of Piedro. In Frida, the main character made a choice to become a painter since it became her way to express the problems she had undergone since childhood. In addition, she also got a lot of influence to become a painter from her husband. How are their lives changed? The three characters experience transformation in their lives. Tita in the movie, Like Water for chocolate, changes from a woman that obeys tradition to one that refuses traditions on marriage. In the story, Tita is seen condemning the ghost of Mama Elena that keeps coming around to torment her with her unborn child. In addition, Tita had an affair prior to her marriage to John whom he loved, though not as much as Piedro. Tita is seen transforming from a girl that obeyed her mother to one who defies traditions and beats all odds to eventually marry the person she loved most. In the story of Frida, transformation can also be seen as she remained strong willed despite her problems. In getting polio, a muscular disease at a tender age that affects walking, and then getting involved in an accident that left her with lots of fractures, she still manages to walk out of the hospital. In Maria Full of Grace, Maria transformed from worse to worst. In having a job, though young, she quit after mistreatment from her boss and ended up in transporting cocaine from Columbia to New York. Explore the elements in the films that make their stories ring true? In the film Maria Full of Grace, the film is made to look real by the setting from which it got acted from. Columbia is a poor country and got high rates of teenagers involved in selling drugs. In having Maria falling into that temptation when she lacked finances to cater for her family and herself totally contributed to making the film real. In the film, Frida, the film manages to use a real story of a famous woman painter that once lived in the 20th century though experienced a lot of hardships while growing. In Like water for chocolate, the setting of the film is made in a ranch to bring about the theme, tradition in marriage.
