When I watched the movie I realized that I was afraid of the fact that Robert Neville (Will Smith’s character) was all alone alive in the entire New York City (except for his dog), surrounded by scary half-people-half-zombies-vampires, who were absolutely unexpected and inadequate. Thus I was scared because the danger was at hand during the entire movie. Being alone in a big city is already dreadful because it is a nightmare for any human being to stay alone in the whole world, thus probably another fear that I’ve been experiencing during the film came from my cognitive mapping on my own personality of the situation that Robert Neville happened to live in.

However, it looked like Robert was got used to the situation and the only fear he experienced concerned his life; moreover, as far as he didn’t have anything to lose, he could’ve been scared of dying and not finding out the cure for the terrible virus. Hence, the entire mankind’s existence depended on him and he felt responsible for it. The origins of my fear were mostly engaged with silence throughout the entire film and plot twists with bunches of monsters trying to kill the main hero.

The purpose of fear is to protect the human body from hazards, so the reaction of fear protects human life. Thus when we are afraid we become more concentrated and attentive although our thinking worsens. Cognitive processes play a crucial role in this process as they construct the images of the things we should be careful about in order to be able to define them when they come and protect ourselves. The emotion theory of William James and Carl Lange (Cannon 1927) claims that fear comes from human bodily reactions and the proper emotion appears afterward human body reacts on some scary events detected by the human body.
