Due Art as an expression of emotion Art is an evolutionary creation of a work in a society where initially created. Collingwood defines art as an imaginative, emotional expression emotion; attempt to reach, by thought and how to overcome certain problems in artists find themselves in the present. He brings out his opinion of art, art not proper, craft, magic, entertainment, and intention of an artist. Any work of art in itself never finished and only ceases upon the manuscript as delivery day is at hand.

According to Collingwood, imaginative expression of emotion is putting a vague feeling to a clear feeling through artwork. Clarification involves moving from a general awareness to a precise feeling. The distinctive feature of imaginative expression is that the artist makes it clear on a piece of art. Vague feeling is general feeling which is different from communicating a message which feeling is specific. Vague feeling is only in the mind of the artist and who only has the knowledge of it while many people can interpret the message communicated.

Magic art and entertainment are forms of craft and not art proper. Art magic as a form arouses particular feelings in practical societal life. They can be in the form of song, a painting or a dance. Magic serve certain purpose and entertainment serves no purpose but pleasurable feelings (Warburton 49).Art proper is the imaginative expression of where artist vague feelings are made precise. Art, not proper defines an artist intention to arouse the emotions of his audience instead of his own. According to Collingwood, art is a conscious way to achieve a conscious purpose and that art and craft have no distinction.

He sees art as another type of craft, and that art can exist on its own. Art is different from craft in that art does not need planning as it is an expression of emotions and craft needs planning as the artist knows what they want as the definite end. According to his technical theory, art is not necessarily a technical matter that can be taught, but as a skill that one is born with. The properties of art making gives emphasis that an artist will express concerns on the need to get the emotions clear.

It requires designing, skills, reaction to chance as it needs not planning while making a work of art (Warburton 41).Collingwood emphasis on process of an artist intention is that, the artist must refine his emotion and be able to attain knowledge by expressing clearly what his emotions are. An artist intention is to arouse and achieve reactions from audiences but not arousing his own. An artist intention is an idea of his work that is difficult to explain, but only comes out in the working.

Collingwood remains an idealist by explaining that work of art does not need to exist in any form of material but can exist as an idea in the mind an artist. Matter or raw material is an expression of emotions on a manuscript or an object. An artist intention is accurate when his viewer enjoys the imaginary experience that the elements arouse in them such as colors, landscapes, the depicted forms or the muscular movements. It is inaccurate when the viewer only enjoys the physical painting or object in the exhibition or after reading an artwork; the viewer will seem to turn into an artist (Warburton 56).

In conclusion, many critics of Collingwood find his definition of art implausible as they consider art indefinable. It is also not logical to seek the essence of art because Collingwood includes many things that are not art and does not include some essential cases of art. He qualifies a lot of work as work of art which is not always the case. Also, he includes the word expression in defining art such as some of the work expressed by Hitchcock’s film does not qualify as art. He denies that work of art requires planning and does not include the distinction between the end and the means (Warburton 61).
