Henry MatisseTowards the end of his life, Henri Matisse created one of the most imaginary and challenging, contemporary art forms. Most famous for his paintings, Matisse built a chapel to show his gratitude to the nun who cared for him after his operation. He designed everything himself – from the architecture, to the furniture and decoration. Matisse called this building “the crowning achievement in his entire carrier”. This extraordinary edifice remains an art monument with its cult objects, priestly ornaments, stained glass windows, stalls and ceramics.
A masterpiece of sacred art the Rosaire chapel evokes serene feelings. Matisse was known as an atheist. It seems that this chapel defies his religious believes. The tree of life reveals a powerful zest for life through the stained glass windows, which let the glowing sunlight elevate the spiritual sensation. Even the suffering of Christ, which is on the opposite side of the chapel demostrates, not only the suffering and the repudiation, but also the celebration that life is. Matisse says that all his life he was trying to create a sense of calmness in his paintings and art forms.
The reason for this was that he himself was in need of peace. We all endure moments of anxiety and anguish and we can relate to this feelings. Through art Matisse tried to ease the turmoil and the Rosaire Chapel is a demonstration of phenomental artistic creativity.Wassily KandinskyKandinsky's painting called “Composition VII”. For Kandinsky colour was closely related to musical forms – we see colour as we hear music – an aesthetic experience. Kandinsky, as a modern 20th Century artist tries to cause disruption and disassociated from the perceived world.
His colours and forms in this painting evoke feelings of disharmony. This abstractive shapes create a conflict within themselves. Nothing in the modernistic era matches. The world doesn't have a narrative and things don't make sense. The apocalyptic theme is inescapable.References:BBC Matisse,”Conclusions of Modern Masters Episode of Henri Matisse.
