Summary and Review of Selma Movie Selma movie is a memorable true story set in 1995 during the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr with the assistance of President Johnson started a risky movement to ensure that the Americans had equal voting privileges. In the movie, David Oyelowo and Tom Wilkinson represent the principles of equity. Black people were still denied voting privileges. King intimidated the government by stressing that they would hold their demonstrations in Selma, Alabama.
The situation created additional tension between the two parties. Due to their heroic match, the president decided to amend the 1995 American Voting Rights Act (Lee 1). In the movie, Ava DuVernay narrates the story of how King and his family created a transformation that changed the American history forever. The movie is a representation of the ancient darker days experienced by black Americans. The message ends with promises that terror will never be accepted or celebrated. Apart from depicting the advancement of change, Selma shows stunted evolution.
It is a reminder that history is necessary to avoid making mistakes. The story gives an outline of both the ancient times and the way forward. While representing King, Oyelowo becomes a revelation in the movie. For instance, he brings out the spirit of his character instead of a visual interpretation. He brings out the image of the King as an exhausted man with the task of creating change and then combines it with disobedience, comedy, strength, and calculated expertise. Oyelowo’s outstanding performance depicts King as a complicated and imperfect person whose belief in God prevented him from experiencing absolute despair.
This touching film intends to irritate, depress, and inspire the audience. Works CitedLee, Felicia. “The man who would be king“. New York Times. 18 December 2014. Web. 2015 http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/21/movies/david-oyelowos-pivotal-role-in-selma.html?_r=0
