Although, certain elements of negativity or dystopia may exist, majority of the aspects will be based on utopian ideals. However, other creators could create a dystopian future society in their works, with the habitable earth, human living conditions, even human relationships, and so on, all bordering on negativity. Although, there may be certain utopian elements, the dystopian nature could be reflected in various aspects of human lives, particularly in the human relationships. So, by focusing on Blade Runner, an analysis will be done regarding how specific forms of “cinematic language” or conventions like futuristic setting and human relationships were used to achieve the genre conventions of science fiction, and how conventions like heroism and religious cult were used to a lesser extent to achieve the genre conventions of film noir and horror respectively.

In the film, Blade Runner, the dystopian elements were maximally visible more than the utopian ideals, particularly in the setting of Los Angeles. The Los Angles’ societies featured in the film appear to be sullied, even while being advanced. Advanced in the sense, advanced science and technological aspects particularly humanoid robots known as replicants have been maximally incorporated into the lifestyle of humans. Along with these replicants, the towering skyscrapers and neon lit billboards reflects the heightened commercialism.

At the same time, director Scott also features old and crumpling buildings. So, in a way, the film uses or mixes old buildings such as Los Angeles’ Bradbury Building, and then adds artificial elements like neon lights with an intention to create a futuristic setting.
