Gangster squad’s movie technique Gangster squad is a movie based on a book by Will Beall and Paul Lieberman, the genre of a movie is a combination of action drama and crime. This movie is loosely based on the life of a mo king known as Mickey Cohen; a gangster based in Los Angeles who was also part of a Jewish mafia around the 1930’s to 1960’s. Reuben Fleisher being the director of the movie chose an outstanding number of very renowned actors who took the roles of various people to bring out the crime aspects the movie was based on. The perspective this movie genres could be related to movies that were produced earlier in time. Movies such as public enemy; a movie played by Johnny Depp was released in the year 2009, also based on the criminal activities that were undertaken by John Dillinger around the 1930s. The two movies mentioned above both share commonness in that their elements reflect older movies such as the Godfather in relation to the techniques adapted and the roles of characters. Mafia movie goes back as far as the 1940 where such movies as Capone were made. This movie was a black and white film based on the life of Al Capone (Anastasia & Glen, 12). One similarity that could be denoted from the mafia movies is that they are majorly based on the events that took place in real life and the characters in the movies are a true reflection of the characters that existed. The Godfather to the current day tops the movie charts as one of the greatest mafia movies ever made, from the success, that this movie underwent the writers of the Gangster squad movie chose to reflect their genre to such movies to try to realize similar success as that which was achieved from the script of the Godfather. The Godfather being a book written by Mario Puzo depicts the Mafia as organized crimes, which have roots in various families who enjoy protection from the organization. Relative to this, the gangster squad chose to reflect this aspect on the life of Mickey Cohen who is the ‘top dog’ of the businesses that he runs. Mickey Cohen being played by Sean Penn in the movie is a ruthless mob king who has connections from all aspects of the city and outside the country as well. In the Godfather, the mob leader known as Vito Carlene, played by Marlon Brando, Vito runs some businesses in the city and collects taxes from businesses in the form of taxes. The don has goons who do the dirty work such as using force on those people who refuses to pay their taxes on time. The artwork from both movies have the similarity in the form that the mobsters are depicted to be people who undertake different businesses, not necessarily legal but just something to keep them off the police radar. In the crime genres movie world, the depiction of gangsters as businesspersons has been the focus of most of the writers who chooses to use this as the plot by which the downfall of the organization falls. In both the movie gangster squad and the Godfather, there are police who are constantly on the tail of these crime lords having tapped their phones and assigned special officers to infiltrate their families for information. Most moviemakers to bring forth the fall of the mob families at the end being that the police are in most cases successful in establishing fault in the businesses and use this against them utilize this technique then. From the record of the fall of the mafia organizations in America, the fall of Mobsters have differed from those in the movies, in most situations. From the records, of the fall of John Dillinger in the Movie Public enemy was that the Police waylaid and gunned Dillinger down killing him at the same point. There are doubts in the real life situation of whether it was indeed the mobster John Dillinger or just someone who resembled him that was gunned down. Another technique that the movie producers have always utilized is the depiction of gangsters as people who wore black suits and talked in some tough manner. This aspect could be regarded as that element retained from the dressing code of Italians. Movies such as the Godfather depict the mafia as being rich Italian family that resided in America where they conducted their businesses. Italy has the rich history of big designers who majored it suit designs. Big designers such as Giorgio Armani, Rocco Barocco and Rene Caovilla are some of the designers renowned for some of the suit designs. The utility of using black suits in gangster movies gave the idealism to the audience of the movie of who the gangsters were. Anyone getting in a cinema hall to watch a movie with the genre of the mafia movies will clearly look forward to spotting a person wearing a black suit in the movie. The similarities that exist in the dressing code of the crime movies can then be awarded inspirational value as their basis is mostly rooted in the old techniques that were used (Tierney, 3). Gangster squad is a perfect example of such a depiction of how the mobsters used to dress at the time setting that was intended for the movie, more so being that the movie Godfather had already provided the platform for this technique the making of the movie was made easier. Another aspect that the movie, gangster squad has borrowed is the adaptation of the color scheme that was used in the classic movies: Godfather, Capone. These classic movies have been designed with a grayish background as to appeal to the older times. The use of color schemes by movie producers is majorly intended to enable the audience appreciate its time lime or the themes that existed within the period being expressed. On the present movie under similar genre, Gangster squad was also designed with the similar grayish background as to bring out the older times that the character Mickey Cohen existed. With the color consideration, creating a movie based on the life of someone that existed in a different generation without regards to what was present at the time would be pointless and senseless. At the modern time, countless movie writers are working tirelessly to come up with original stories and scripts. Being that good movie scripts consumes too much time, most writers draws their interest from interesting stories such as those of John Dillinger and Mickey Cohen. Being that these stories took place around the 1930’s, very few people can actually remember such old stories or rather, most of the people did not exist at these times. Therefore, in order for the movie producers to be able to capture the past times, they should ensure that they adapt and draw inspirations from similar movies that were made earlier. Movies are visual art forms that depict the life of people who existed at earlier times and tell their stories in a way that is realistic and relevant to the audience intended. For this purpose, the artists that are involved in how the story is portrayed in a movie should be judged depending on how well the story is told. A good movie production then involves a whole unit from the producers who are responsible for the movie setting and the characters to the directors who decides on the actors who are to bring out the characters in whatever story being told.
