Visual Arts and Film Studies, Assignment Exam 3 4. Identify the features of African-American art or music that are considered uniquely “black.” (Support your ideas with concrete examples, not stereotypical nonsense) Another major aspect of the African-American Arts that is uniquely black is the African aesthetic infusion. This marks a return to a collective ethnic pride and cultural sensibility. This was much in proof during the Renaissance of Harlem and in the Negritude celebration among the literary circles and artistic in the African continent, U.S., and the Caribbean almost four decades prior. African clothing, like the dashiki and hairstyles that are natural such as the afro, gained popularity is also considered uniquely black. More importantly, the African-American aesthetic encouraged political awareness and personal pride among African Americans. African-American music is derived from the characteristically polyrhythmic music of Africa’s ethnic groups, in particular those in the Sub-Saharan, Sahelean, and Western regions. African oral traditions encourage the use of music to relay messages, ease suffering, teach lessons, and convey history, which are key features of African-American music. The African pedigree of African-American music is apparent in some common features: Complex multi-part harmony, melisma, the use of falsetto, blue notes, swung notes, improvisation, percussion, syncopation, and call and response (Www.blackartdepot.com). 5. Identify the features of women’s art that are considered uniquely “female.” (Support your ideas with concrete examples, not stereotypical nonsense) When it comes to music, the use of soprano voices is usually associated with women; it is uniquely ‘female’. Although nowadays a lot of male can come up with soprano in their music, it is still considered feminine. There are a lot of female artists who do this e.g. Beyonce, Mariah Carey etc. Another feature is in film and visual arts, where long hair, weaves, or braided hair are considered uniquely feminine. In a lot of movies, it is the women who have plaited hair. It is a feminine feature, even though; some men have plaited hair in films and movies. 6. Since much of postmodern literature, architecture, and art are considered “funny,” explain why humor and parody appear so essential to postmodern expression. Provide examples to defend your point of view. When it comes to humor and parody, is the inclination of postmodern culture, theorists, and artists, to be parodic or playful. Certainly, films or shows will frequently step outside of representation that is mimetic all in all so as to make themselves humorous in mid-stride. Hutcheon explained that Parody- often called ironic intertextuality, appropriation, pastiche, or quotation—is frequently regarded as being essential to postmodernism expressions, both by its defenders and detractors. While the vital concern, of other worldviews is what the actual world in reality is postmodernism focuses on how we describe and perceive what the world is., Language that is plainly expressed, which lacks humor and parody, is too obvious, modernist and realist. Postmodern language requires expressions that use indeterminacy, humor, parody and play as critical techniques to draw all these to the attention. Media advertising and pop cultures are full of such examples. Good examples of these being Lichtenstein and Warhol are (Www.cla.purdue.Edu). 7. Describe how high-technology and new industrial techniques have influenced the art styles of the last fifty years by providing specific examples to support your generalizations. In music, there has been the growth and development of the Acoustic guitar into the Electric Guitar which makes use of pickups. There is also the Bass Electric which came up in the recent years. Not to talk about Electric Violins, Amps, Microphones, and new ways of wood cutting to make it more resonant...The list goes on forever. Oh! There are also enormous soundboards that organize and manage every music aspect, which are used in recording studios. High-technology has made music better and of higher quality over the past fifty tears. Other enhancements have been the expediency of paints’ measured gradients. Back in the old days artists would be required to formulate their own paints; processing, things like that would be hard to reproduce and time consuming. High-technology has allowed for an urge in the world of arts, bringing openings to a variety of ways to express the feelings of artists. An artist can make use of technological progressions to convey a story through his or her art pieces. Art has been recognized by people right from the very start as indicated by the past historical objects. Undoubtedly, high-technology has made it potential for new objects and equipments to be taken advantage of and the usage of new mediums. Furthermore, there is the alternative of digital art that will enable artists to work with images and colors even without the most thorough training to create best masterpieces. A lot of technological changes took place during the period of Modernism. Some of these changes included the innovation of the color spectrum, photography, etc. During the era of postmodernism, changes that occurred include digital media, photography that is computer-manipulated. High-technology has fully redirected many art forms e.g. there is a lot more dependence on graphic design in art than there initially was some fifty years ago. Tools of graphic design tools are made use of in marketing and advertising. They can also be used to edit other forms of art, such as film and photography. 8. Describe how commercial advertising has influenced the art styles of the last fifty years by providing examples to support your generalizations. Today’s commercial advertising has undoubtedly been influenced by 20th century art. Most Advertisements look back to the most significant art of the past century when creating their advertisements. It is almost not possible to walk down the streets without coming across billboards with designs that are crafty and catchy phrases. Commercial advertising has come a lengthy way from the ancient and outdated attraction methods. Departed are the times of advertising that is based on the fact. In its place, we have advanced to conceptual advertisements in which the assurance made by the advertiser, of affection, love, everlasting youth and an incredible bottom turns people into obsession. The advertisements sell a way of life, not a product or an actual image; in fact the ad itself becomes the aesthetisation object. Fertile and creative minds, over the decades, have mutated into uncreative minds of the advertising industry. Commercial advertisements have much more than just advertisements; they integrate art styles of every kind to appeal to all tastes, using strong artistic signifiers that stir up certain emotions in viewers. This has remarkably reduced the amount of real, actual creative arts within today’s artists. Works cited "African American Art (By Category) - African American Art Depot."
