Running head: Leon Kroll - "West Shore Terminal" Leon Kroll - "West Shore Terminal" [Institute’s Leon Kroll - "West Shore Terminal"The “West Shore Terminal” by Leon Kroll was painted in 1913 on canvas using oil paints (West Shore Terminal - Leon Kroll). This painting portrays a busy railway station in the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. The artist has mainly used blue and white color which shows the mountains and factories covered with snow. This place is very cold and the trees have shed leaves.

Kroll has made thick and curvy lines to show objects like trains, trees, factories and cables. The ferry boats are carrying people across the river and there is a lot of activity going on in this region. Puffing clouds of smoke are rising from the sparkling trains. Skyscrapers can be seen on the opposite side of the river. This piece of art measures 36 by 48 inches and was purchased with funds given by the Friends of American Art in 2010. The theme of “West Shore Terminal” is basically related to America’s national identity that is the Hudson River and the Rocky Mountains.

Another similar artwork of Leon Kroll is the Terminal Yards as it also shows a train with smoke and snow all over the area. Kroll has probably tried to show the hectic life of America through his work. Kroll painted this because he was inspired by some artists of the Ashcan school like Robert Henri and John Sloan’s work, rejoicing the enthusiasm of New York City.
