[Supervisor’s Mediums of Painting The paper attempts to describe the relationship between an artist and apatron. Furthermore, the paper highlights different mediums of painting.Currently, an artist takes more pride in personal and individual type of an art more of a freelance. Patrons have a desire to own a commissioned portraits from an artist to which they regularly visits. Previously, an artist would have a single patron to which they were devoted and made portraits but today the relationship has not remain the same.

Today, artists have different sources to collect work and they do not rely on single private collections (Lord and Lord). This provides artists freedom to produce anything that they wish to produce without taking orders and performing experimentation. When a patron entered into an agreement with the painter, he made payments for the portrait to which they desired according to their satisfaction. The relationship between artist and a patron is very much different from the relationship between an artist and a consumer.

This is because a patron desires that their portrait should be in accordance with the specified needs. The painter has to obey the orders and will go against his personal desires and experimentation because of the payment that he would receive in order to paint a portrait. Patrons would hire painter for an agreement that they would design the painting according to the tastes of patron themselves and this is why they are willing to pay a a handsome amount to their artists (Lord and Lord). In today’s world there are many mediums for painting being used by an Artist.

Some of the medium includes oil tempera, oil paints, gouache, pastels, water colors and acrylic. Acrylic paint has a quality that it takes little time to get dry and contains pigments which can easily be diluted with water. Pastels have three different forms, the hard, soft and pastel pencils. Amongst which, the soft pastels are widely used by artists because it has the pigments are at a higher portion but has less binder. Hard pastels contain high binding quality but with less pigments and pastel pencils are pencils which contain lead.

Tempera is a medium which consists of colored pigments and allow greater precision for the artist. Water colors need water to show their true color and then become transparent. Therefore, other mediums are used with water colors in order to give special effect (Varron). As so rightly described by Nicolas Poussin that “Painting is the lover of beauty and the queen of the arts”, I am greatly attracted towards painting but the medium which I dearly like is Tempera. This is because the medium provides an artist with smooth matte finish and its history can be found in early Egyptian sarcophagi in which they use to decorate mummy portraits.

In this medium egg is been used as a binding force which is mostly used in canvas or wood panels. Unlike paints, the color would not change when it dries up and it would not even grow transparent over time (Varron). Works CitedLord, Barry and Gail Lord.
