It attempts to represent what one would actually be able to “feel” or “see” with a sense of shock and demonstration. Manet’s work broke the mold of realism and depicted elements with some surreal aspects in order to highlight the main points behind the piece of work. This resulted in his work being labeled as “immoral” and “amateurish” because it was demonstrating the unexpected, while Bougueraeu was praised by critics. Bouguereau actually presented more of what was expected during this time for elements of realism to catch the attention of the audience.

Many historians have considered ‘Dejuner’ to be the first modern work of art because it depicts all of the elements generally present in modernistic pieces. The advent of photography influenced the impressionists to abandon the stylistics of traditional painting because it became apparent that art could be created by a serious of dots (we could envision these as the modern term of pixels) in the photographs.

Thus, standing far away from the picture, a general aspect of the picture is presented, but close up, it seems more like a series of dots (however, pixel quality today is extremely high in quality so this is not so true anymore). In order to create this photographic effect, especially with light, the impressionists began to use the “dot” approach to their paintings. An example of this is Monet’s works in general. He painted the traditional landscape in “Waterlillies,” for example, giving an overall feeling of the impression of light.

Standing close to the painting, we can see the colors and dots that he used, but standing far away, we can see the landscape and the impression of lighting. Impressionism differs from Dutch Baroque art because it had a focus on the photographic effect as well as the overall concept of lighting. Lighting was much more important to the impressionists than the Baroque painters, and therefore the use of the dot effect presents the concepts of lighting in a much more dramatic manner.
