The "Hollywood movie history" essay traces the history of this land from the 1870s to 1960s and describes the salient points in its development. In 1910, film maker D.W. Griffith working for Biograph Company, came to Downtown Los Angeles, and with his acting troop to shoot films. Thus it was Griffith who shot the first ever movie in Hollywood, then without a studio. The film was called “In Old California”. It was a Biograph melodrama. The movie troop stayed there for several months before going back to New York. The oldest company, still existing in Hollywood is Nester and Centaur Films based in Gower Gulch and founded by William Horsley. This company created the first film laboratory in Hollywood. Nester Company started the first film studio in Hollywood in 1911.The studio functioned from an old tavern on the corner of Sunset and Gower. It was from here the early Hollywood legends like D. W. Griffith, (the director credited with the evolution of the film language, through his classics like “The Birth of a Nation’, “intolerance”), and Cecil B.Demille, known for his biblical epics, regularly started making films.
Before the World War 1, movies were made in different cities of the United States. But many factors attracted, film makers to Hollywood. One of the major factors was that, they could evade the fees imposed for film making by Thomas Edison who had the patent for movie making process. “Going west had serious impulses of escapism in it: to get away from the Motion Picture Patent Company and the gangsters who had sought to organize film making in the East.”

This research seeks to understand how the histories provided by Hillier (Forty years of change: Hollywood from the 1940’s to the1980’s) and Elsaesser’s ‘Notes on the unmotivated hero; the pathos of failure; American films in the 70’s’ come to highlight different aspects of the film industry yet equally maintain their statuses as ‘histories’ and not simply perspectives.
Hollywood movies form most of the programs in local television stations and international television stations. Hollywood movies contribute a lot to the economy of United States. Need for entertainment locally and internationally has contributed to development of film industry in Hollywood.
But of course it ended and there are reasons to this. Without an iota of doubt, the post-classical Hollywood era ended to make way for an all-new era and that era was the blockbuster. At this point, it is very important to explain what blockbuster means in this context.
The radical elements that can be sited in these movies are the history itself, plus the characters that gave life to the story. The tier of movie rendition today is relatively high, and as the day passes by, the developments are tangible through visual and sound effects incorporated in a single production.
Thus, the post- war European movies dealt with the dilemma of adopting capitalist approach or cultural distinctiveness. Action – based films, which were also very dramatic, ruled the European movies in and around 1950. During 1960’s a dramatic shift took place and melodrama started disappearing.
While the deeply entrenched studio system of Hollywood collapsed and the onset of commercial television set in among the national suburbanized landscape nationally, new Hollywood set in.With the setting in of New Hollywood, classical Hollywood was phased out gradually. The classical Hollywood era was characterized by mass production of movies by cartel studios for guaranteed market virtually. The phenomenon of going to the movies was replaced by watching television in the era of the new Hollywood (Cook 1990; Buscombe 1977; Schiach 1995) .
