Plan 9 from the Outer Space Plan 9 from the Outer Space is a science fiction movie that got released way back in the year of 1959. Ever since, it owes its fame to being awarded the title of the worst movie ever produced in mankind's entertainment history. This was mainly due to the incoherent plot it had, the odd dialogue, threadbare production techniques, inept acting, and very shoddy special effects. In fact, it was in this movie that the minimal acting talent and creativity had ever been displayed.
This movie is about an alien invasion to take over the planet Earth, in which humans reside, by awakening the dead. The aliens initiate their plan with the awakening of Bela Lugosi in a Dracula costume and his wife Maila Vampira together with an overweight police officer Tor Johnson. The movie was directed by Edward Wood. It broke the record of having a very poor quality, graphically making the movie highly unsuitable for viewing. There are factors that contributed to this movie holding the title it currently possesses.
The prime reason for the poor quality production was that the movie was produced on a very low budget of only $60,000. This was not enough for a science fiction movie which usually requires so much to be put into production. Due to the low budget, the actors had very poor costumes, such as that of Dracula, which made the movie to be more like a comedy than an action movie. The grooming of the actors did not also achieve the desired effect at least to the position of the movie at a reasonable level: the makeup of Vampira did not scare anyone and neither did that of Officer Tor.
The lighting of the movie did not also portray the desired devilish nature that was expected due to the unrefined nature of darkness. Since this is a science fiction movie, its effects are expected to be cutting edge. However, in Plan 9 from Outer Space it was exactly the opposite of what the expectations were. The movie has an extremely poor effect of both light and sound. The light effects look very artificial based on the fact that the light and the dark do not seem to blend in any possible scene.
This is very evident when an alien spaceship light shines over the policeman at the grave yard. No emotions are intrigued from the audience of the movie, making it rather a comedy than a thriller. The smoke after the gun shots seems to be blown by a person who was smoking a cigarette and the smoke effect looks like white crayon shadings done by a baby on a dark carbon paper. The zombie movements are the worst I have ever seen in any thriller because Vampira moves, looks and does the same thing all the time.
Another aspect of this movie that made it win its award of the worst production ever was the dialogue acting styles that show no movie acting talents at all. The speech, that most of the actors such as Vampire Girl and Johnson the zombie should deliver, must be thrilling and action packed. However, despite the expected dialogues they get to utter words that leave the audiences laughing instead of being thrilled. This does not happen only with these two actors, it is also seen in the movie when the police talk about the aliens and the zombies at the time they get attacked.
They deliver their speeches in such a way that they get to touch the sense of humor of the audience. This fails the film to great extents due to the fact that it arouses wrong senses of the audience. Wood had just the correct movie of the time to revolutionize the science fiction entertainment industry. What he lacked, however, was the correct tools and the right people to implement the golden idea. This can be observed from the very beginning: the director wrote a very weak script to support the correct actions of the actors.
The actors also never did their best to make the movie stand out. They acted lamely and portrayed flat emotions. To spoil the recipe further, they had the wrong costumes supported by the wrong sound, and graphical effects turned an action intended movie into one of the most impressive comedies which the audience had not experienced for a long time. It is because of all the above reasons that Plan 9 from the Outer Space was dubbed as the worst movie ever. Work cited Rhodes, Gary D. Lugosi: His Life in Films, on Stage, and in the Hearts of Horror Lovers.
